GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
The Center for Advanced Molecular Diagnostics (CAMD) consists of two CLIA-certified clinical laboratories, cytogenetics and molecular diagnostics for the Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI), and a Partners Research Core, the CAMD Translational Biomarker Core (TBC). Our mission is to provide high quality innovative genetic diagnostic services to support the patient care and clinical research missions of our institutions.
Under the general direction of the Associate Medical Director and Senior Research Scientist, the clinical supervisor is responsible for the overall direction and supervision of work activities of personnel engaged in the projects for the TBC. The ideal candidate is a highly motivated individual who enjoys having broad responsibilities and opportunities, thrives in a collaborative work environment and is skilled at working on multiple projects concurrently. The Clinical Laboratory Supervisor must have 3 years expertise in molecular diagnostics in a clinical and/or CLIA setting and the ability to develop, troubleshoot, and implement cutting edge technologies. Experience with process improvement and quality management is desired.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities:
- Provides leadership and direction for the operation of the TBC laboratory to assure that project milestones are met and the appropriate development and execution of projects and deliverables.
- Provides daily supervision of technical and service employees in the TBC laboratory of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory.
- Troubleshoots and resolves all technical and employee problems with the help of the Associate Medical Director or Senior Research Scientist, if necessary.
- Plans, organizes, delineates, and schedules duties and responsibilities of personnel at the TBC laboratory in conjunction with the Associate Medical Director or Senior Research Scientist and/or program manager and with open communication with the CAMD clinical laboratories to balance needs, if necessary.
- Responsible for Quality Control Program at the TBC laboratory, including review of patient and quality control results for accuracy and completeness, maintenance of all quality control records and timely completion of proficiency surveys, and for maintenance and calibration of all equipment in the TBC laboratory. These activities must be performed in a manner consistent with the clinical laboratories of CAMD.
- Evaluates and updates the TBC laboratory policies and procedures, revising and reviewing procedure manuals as required, and maintaining consistency with the clinical laboratories of CAMD.
- Is responsible for hiring, counseling, evaluating, and terminating employees in conjunction with the Associate Medical Director / Senior Research Scientist / CAMD administrative and executive leadership following established laboratory and hospital guidelines.
- Independently performs competency assessments and assists with merit reviews by providing written and/or verbal feedback about technologist's performance.
- Performs TBC procedures as required.
- Acts as timekeeper for TBC.
- Participates in the research, development and implementation of new laboratory procedures and instruments with execution and planning of technical validations of new assays under guidance of the CAMD Associate Director and Senior Research Scientist. Participates in preparation of CLIA/CAP compliant validation reports and all additional required documentation.
- Responsible for the orientation and training and mentoring of TBC technologists and other staff. Communicates department and hospital policy to staff.
- Participates in internal and external continuing education programs. Keeps current regarding developments in technical instrumentation and analytical techniques in Molecular Diagnostics.
- Recommends and participates in quality improvement initiatives.
- Follows all JC National Patient Safety Goals and related BWH Pathology and Hospital Policies.
- Provides a spirit of professionalism and excellence in performance among the Molecular Diagnostics staff.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in a biological/physical science required, or other qualifications as described in the Federal Register, 42 CFR, Subpart M 493.1403 - 1495. Coursework in molecular biology and/or genetics highly desired.
At least 3-5 years of relevant experience in a Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory.
Molecular Biology MB (ASCP) or Masters/PhD in a biological/physical science preferred.
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Must have a high level of analytical and technical ability to operate complex laboratory equipment, maintain their performance, and resolve technical equipment problems.
Must have a comprehensive understanding of analytical techniques, ability to relate test results to normal and pathological states, and ability to interpret quality control data.
Must have ability to make logical decisions, based on sound judgment and experience.
Must have an understanding of computer technology and its applications to analytical procedures and quality control.
Must possess interpersonal skills to interact courteously and communicate effectively with co-workers.
Must be well organized, able to work independently, and be able to handle stressful situations.
Must be able to perform as a senior team member, providing leadership, guidance, and direction to other technologists.
Must be able to perform routine and complex molecular biology techniques.
Must have the supervisory and managerial abilities necessary to direct and coordinate activities of personnel.
