Job Description:
As a NYS-licensed and Supervisory-qualified Medical Technologist you are responsible for the daily operations of the Clinical Laboratory and Blood Bank. You will direct, review, and/or verifies work of other clinical laboratory personnel, including Medical Lab Technologists/ Technicians and lab support staff. You will supervise functions and activities of the shift, ensuring an efficient workflow and regulatory compliance. You will direct support staff as needed to meet hospital or laboratory needs. You will correlate knowledge and understanding of theory to independently solve problems and answer questions related to the clinical laboratory. You will work along with laboratory management, you are responsible for maintaining policies and procedures, quality control practices, inventory, and staff evaluations. You supervise the clinical laboratory department in the absence of the LFH Dept. Director of Lab Services, addressing issues or concerns in a timely and professional manner.
As the MT Technical Supervisor you will also perform the duties of a Medical Technologist.
A Medical Technologist (MT) performs Clinical Laboratory and Blood Bank tests or procedures or examinations, including quality control, equipment calibration and maintenance, and regulatory documentation. The Medical Technologist participates in quality assurance activities and performance improvement as related to the laboratory. The Medical Technologist correlates knowledge and understanding of theory, which requires the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility, while striving to achieve service excellence for the lab’s internal and external customers. Education:
- Candidates must be qualified as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist in accordance with New York State Department of Health regulations.
Licensure/Certificates/Memberships:
- Licensure by NYS SED as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist, required. Or licensure- eligible with a limited permit or limited license as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist.
- Limited Permit is granted to individuals that meet the educational requirements for licensure except for the licensing examination which must be taken within one year from the issuance of a limited permit.
Experience:
- Experience in a standard laboratory methodologies, required.
- Previous clinical laboratory experience, preferred.
Skills:
- Strong attention to detail, precision, and commitment to accuracy are essential.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.
- Ability to build rapport quickly, develop trust, sustain working relationships, and represent LFH positively in internal and external meetings is required.
- Need to possess good interpersonal and communication skills due to supervisory nature of position.
- Strong time-management and organizational skills are required.
- Must be familiar with Microsoft Office applications, including but not limited to, Excel, Word, and Power Point.
Physical Requirements:
- Position requires extensive standing, routine walking, occasional sitting, and some repetitive hand motions.
- Ability to push/pull up to 50 lbs and lift objects of up to 50 lbs is occasionally required.
- Position includes exposure to moving electro-mechanical parts, some loud noises, and infectious substances.
- Position requires extensive close visual work, requiring visual acuity.
- Position requires some telephone communication, requiring the ability to listen and respond clearly.
- Some laboratory tests performed are dependent on color determination. Ability to differentiate colors is required to perform these tests.
