Receives samples for testing and performs initial data entry, recognizes and prioritizes STAT specimens. Provides information regarding specimen results, status and collection requirements. Prepares reference lab specimens for shipment. This individual is the first line of communication with medical personnel in the hospital and the community, requiring excellent telephone skills and a thorough knowledge of laboratory test terminology. Requirements:

  • Able to communicate effectively, pleasantly, cooperatively and discreetly with patients, physicians, hospital employees and the public. Able to work under pressure. Willingness to increase knowledge of laboratory/hospital functions. Demonstrates creativity and initiative in problem solving.

Responsibilities:

  • Answers the telephone, provides general laboratory information and directs calls to appropriate area and/or person.
  • Discreetly answers patients and customers questions and allays their concerns.
  • Informs Team Leader or Tech Specialist of unusual problems, questions or complaints.
  • Verifies and clarifies test requests as necessary.
  • Receives samples for Routine, STAT and timed tests and performs data entry of test information.
  • Uses equipment carefully and assists in the maintenance of equipment used.
  • Prepares specimens for testing or shipment by centrifugation and refrigeration.
  • Delivers, stores, packs and arranges for transportation of specimens.
  • Recognizes the CLA's role as it relates to the overall function of the laboratory, patient care, customer service and the business of healthcare.
