Job SummaryThe Upward Bound Project is a federally funded program to encourage post-secondary preparation of high school students who are from low-income families and are first-generation college-bound students. The summer component consists of an intensive, six-week academic program during which the students reside in the University residence halls and receive high school enrichment instruction in language arts, foreign language, mathematics, financial literacy, and science. Supervised recreation, guidance and peer advising, and career exploration also provided.

Job availability is dependent on grant funds.

ResponsibilitiesHelps the children experience success in physical, social and intellectual tasks. Reinforces and broadens concepts as presented by the teacher. Observes behavior, documents and may offer suggestions to the teacher. Does not directly communicate with parents concerning children’s problems. May assume full responsibility for the group for short periods of time when the teacher is involved in other activities. Assists teacher in activities and tasks which contributes to an orderly, clean environment for children. Meets with the teacher and staff to assist in planning. Plans a morning or afternoon small group activity with assistance of Head Teacher. Supervises playground unless specifically requested to be indoors.

Department Specific Qualifications
  • Must be at least 20 years old or sophomore status and have some experience tutoring.
  • Those majoring in education or have an education background are highly preferred.
  • Applicants should be innovative and creative and enjoy working with adolescents from diverse economic, social, and cultural backgrounds and academic skill ranges.
  • Persons who have succeeded in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the target population are encouraged to apply.

Minimum QualificationsThis is an entry-level position. Training will be provided. Must demonstrate an interest in learning about child development and guidance; a willingness to take direction from the assigned teacher; willing to obtain a food handlers permit, TB test, Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) background check, first aid training are required. Demonstrated human relation and effective human relations skills are also required.
Preferences
  • Applicants with good communication skills and experience working with youth are preferred.
  • Strong academic background in Math & Science preferred.
  • Persons who have succeeded in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the target population are encouraged to apply.
