Why does the job exist?Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within two weeks of closing date.
THIS POSITION MAY BE USED TO FILL MULTIPLE VACANCIES.
This position will determine proper classification of inmates, determine placement into eligible programming and inmate release preparation.
- Determines proper classification of inmates as facilities recommend inmates for transfer
- Reviews goodtime recommendations
- Monitors facilities classification entries to ensure they contain the necessary information
- Assists in determining placement into special management into special management programs by reviewing and making recommendations for edits
- Gathers necessary documentation and ensures placements meet the criteria
- Directly communicates with facility classification staff and provide guidance in advanced classification issues as needed
- Assists in training and teaching facility classification officers in proper NMCD classification procedures
- Knowledge of the current approved version of the Duran Consent Decree and how this pertains to facilities
- The New Mexico Corrections Facilities
- Assisting interdisciplinary teams in the evaluation of offenders
- Participating in follow-up services and providing monitoring of offenders
- Inmate Classification process
- The reentry process
- Application of Good Time Laws
- Monitoring activities using a tracking system
Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Guidance and Counseling, Penology, Sociology, Social Work or Criminology and two (2) years of experience in a correctional setting. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

- Education and years of experience must be related to the purpose of the position.
- If Minimum Qualification requires a specific number of "semester hours" in a field (e.g. 6 semester hours in Accounting), applicants MUST have those semester hours in order to meet the minimum qualifications. No substitutions apply for semester hours.
Statutory Requirements:
Assignment as a Probation Parole Officer at NMCD must adhere to the following:
- At the time of their appointment, must be citizens of the United States.
- At the time of their appointment, have reached the age of majority.
- Be of good moral character and not have been convicted of a felony or any crime of moral turpitude in the courts of this or any other state or in the federal courts.
- Subject to a drug test as a condition of employment and on-going random drug testing as a condition of assignment to a safety sensitive position.
- Maintenance of skills in self-defense, handcuffing, baton, and chemical agents and annual re-certification.
Executive Order 2021-046 requires all employees with the State of New Mexico to provide either proof of COVID-19 vaccination or proof of a COVID-19 viral test every week.
The Public Health Order (on Vaccination) dated August 17, 2021, requires Congregate Care Facility Workers and Hospital Workers to be fully vaccinated.

Work is performed in an adult prison environment, which includes daily contact with inmates. Willingness to work in a correctional facility, may be required to work odd hours, overtime, holidays, and weekends.
