Job Description
Overview: Pillar is currently on the lookout for a full-time Civil Engineering Design Technician to join our Grantsville, MD team. This individual will manage and provide design and permitting services related to project needs of the Civil product lines. This individual will work in conjunction with the Manager of Engineering and Product Managers such as Fiber Optics Product Manager. The Civil Engineering Design Technician will work closely with Project Managers, Engineers and Sales Managers to support existing Civil Design and the expansion of new business opportunities in Civil Design.


This individual will have a thorough understanding of all aspects of Civil Design and must be proficient with the products and services offered by Pillar Innovations and must be flexible and willing to work extended hours as needed.


The Civil Engineering Design Technician will report to the Manager of Engineering Services and will work primarily out of the Pillar Grantsville office and may require some travel to customer sites.

Responsibilities:
  • Determine Drawing and Permit requirements for each site-specific project, and collect necessary public drawings, GIS information to create such
  • Coordinate One-Call utility locations for existing utilities
  • Interpret civil and utility drawings to include all the required drawing information for permit applications and construction activities
  • Determine Best Path options in conjunction with site surveyors and project managers. May also include assisting or conducting some site surveying
  • Utilize computer aided design software, such as AutoCAD Civil and/or AutoCAD Maps to develop 2D design drawings
  • Creation of drawing packages requiring Title sheet, Symbols and Site keys, Notes, Typical and specific Details, standard scale Plans, Profile drawings for buried utilities, Views, Traffic Plans, and any other required drawing packet information
  • Modifying or adding drawings to existing drawing package and permit packages as directed by engineers and management team
  • Creating and maintaining accurate material lists and permit sheets
  • Sourcing, filling out, and submitting the required Permit applications
  • Organizing and planning work tasks to meet company goals
  • Sustain working knowledge of CAD Best Practices and company Standard Operating Procedures
  • Maintaining accurate records and files according to quality standards
  • Adhere to project schedules and immediately communicate any issues that can potentially delay the project
  • Assist the engineering group as requested in the civil bidding & proposal process

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Accounting, Business Management or related discipline and/or equivalent Technical School with 3 years of related work experience
  • Possess a sound knowledge of Engineering, Surveying, Utilities infrastructure, and their standard construction practices
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Word, Excel and Power Point, and Microsoft Project
  • Must be able to perform multiple assignments; meet deadlines with changing priorities; and balance the needs of multiple projects
  • Ability to read and understand civil drawings and blueprints
  • Proficient in mathematical applications with a detailed and analytical focus
  • Ability to communicate, present information clearly effectively to both technical and nontechnical people
  • Must be a team player capable of making independent decisions
  • Willing and able to work extended hours and overtime to meet business needs, timelines and deadlines
  • Maintain and exhibit a customer and safety focus without exception
