THE ROLE

The Chief Nursing Officer, Providence Medical Group (PMG) Oregon provides clinical leadership to all clinic nursing and medical assistant staff of the Oregon Region Providence Medical Group and Clinical Programs. As principal nursing leader, is responsible for setting, monitoring and enhancing the standards and practices for clinical nursing, including nurse practitioners, and medical assistants. Works closely with senior leadership and clinic leadership to identify, develop, and implement clinical best practices, standards and systems for care delivery that meet the needs of medical group patients, employees and providers. Provides oversight of the safety department and peer review function for PMG to promote a culture of safety. Serves as a role model of professional nursing standards and expectations.

MAJOR CHALLENGES:

  • Providing support for and responding to the needs of clinical practices with varying cultures and practice styles while developing and implementing standard clinical process and work flows within PMG and Clinical Program clinics.
  • Developing new models of care in the non-acute care practice setting that include transformational care initiatives such as the Patient Centered Medical Home.
  • Developing and implementing clinical practice guidelines as well as managing the appropriateness and quality of non-physician clinical care in the medical group.
  • Leading clinical programs that are highly visible and complex while maintaining a spirit of service excellence and collaboration.
  • Balancing goals and objectives of multiple stakeholders representing multiple departments while maintaining relationships with multiple competing entities within PSJH enterprise.
  • Providing input to, coordinating with, and implementing Physician Enterprise initiatives while taking into account regional and local needs

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • As Chief Nursing Officer, PMG Oregon for clinic nursing practice, provides vision, leadership, organization and developmental skills, management skills and tactics to effectively collaborate in an integrated health care delivery environment.
  • Leads and participates in the strategic development of PMG and Clinical Programs in line with Regional, Physician Enterprise and medical group goals, strategies and objectives.
  • Works closely with the PMG Chief Medical Officer and senior leadership team in enhancing the integration and operation of clinical support services for the clinics.
  • Acts as dotted line responsibility for all clinic staff nurses and clinical staff supervisors in PMG.
  • Provides input into the content and implementation of clinic nurse management training.
  • As a member of the medical group senior management team, collaborates to develop and implement plans for the operational infrastructure of systems and workforce planning to accommodate predicted growth.
  • Identifies needed changes in management of care and develops, advocates, and implements policy changes.
  • Monitors compliance with state and federal regulatory requirements which apply to medical assistant practice.
  • Clinical:
  • Responsible for setting clinical direction for nursing in PMG and Clinical Program clinics, including use of RNs and Medical Assistants.
  • Acts as a leadership and clinical resource for all clinic nurses and other members of the clinic leadership team.
  • Brings perspective of nursing standards and practices in collaborating with medical group senior leadership, providers, managers and clinical supervisors to recommend and influence strategic and tactical clinical work flows and processes.
  • Provides leadership and has dotted line accountability for the clinical performance of PMG and clinical program clinic nurses and medical assistants. Assures professional and clinical compliance with the laws, rules and standards of regulatory bodies.
  • Additional responsibilities include:
  • Serving as a member of senior management in the establishment of progressive information systems that are integrated with the management functions of the medical group and the region toward achieving the triple aim.
  • Clinical:
  • Develops and implements clinical competencies for clinic nursing and oversees clinical annual competency reviews. Collaborates with Operations Directors and others to develop and implement other Nurse Quality Supervisor competencies.
  • Collaborates with other medical group departments to ensure appropriate curriculum for training, development and continuing education for clinic staff nurses and medical assistants.
  • Advises and partners with senior Leadership, PMG departments, medical directors, and managers on matters relating to clinical issues within the clinics and service programs.
  • Champions patient and staff safety at all levels of PMG and Clinical Programs.
  • Reduces unnecessary clinical variation and error through implementation of evidence-base clinical and processes. Supports operational to reduce unnecessary variation.
  • Leads the monthly Nurse Quality Committee and Best Practice team and participates in other specialty Best Practice Committees.
  • Participates in and coordinates with Physician Enterprise nursing initiatives

Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS

Required education/experience for this position include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing, Nurse Management, Business, Health Care Administration or related field.
  • 10 or more years of Administrative experience in healthcare, including at least 5 years in a nursing, finance, or operations director of CNO role.
  • Current unencumbered Oregon RN license.
  • BLS Healthcare Provider.
  • Knowledge and understanding of nursing principles, nursing processes and models of care.
  • Knowledge and understanding of administrative principles and procedures, health care trends, standards, laws and regulations.
  • Advanced knowledge of quality improvement processes and methodologies.
  • Ability to develop and implement strategic plans.
  • Demonstrated effective problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor processes, progress and results by holding employees accountable.
  • Ability to learn and integrate new information and processes quickly and lead others toward an objective.
  • Demonstrated independent thinking, judgment and decision-making abilities.
  • Demonstrated excellent leadership relationships. Ability to forge alliances and foster collaboration across entities and disciplines.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Ability to provide overall leadership with a rapidly changing environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead clinical development and implementation teams.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with staff, management, physicians, and the public including formal presentations.
  • Ability to direct multiple and complex processes simultaneously.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with other healthcare team members.

Preferred education/experience for this position include:

  • National Certification from ANA or Professional Organization in relevant field of clinical expertise strongly recommended
