Job Description

Provides direct spiritual care to patients and families to ease, resolve, or reconcile spiritual pain and

distress precipitated by a life-threatening illness.

Responsibilities:

Instruct staff on their responsibility in following the Compliance and Ethics Program.

Detect non-compliance and follow up as appropriate.

Job Duties:

Job knowledge:

  • Knowledge of client centered theology/spiritual orientation and the Theology of Death.
  • Knowledge of community spiritual resources.
  • Develops and maintains positive working relationships with community clergy.
  • Knowledge of death, dying, and bereavement process.
  • Serves as a community resource in areas of dying and grief.
  • Knowledge and understanding of mental and emotional dysfunction.

Interaction with patients:

  • Listens and responds appropriately to patient needs in a timely manner.

  • Adapts communication to meet patient needs.

Documentation:

  • Documents required information.
  • Uses correct terminology.

Bereavement:

  • Plans patients’ memorial/funeral service with family.
  • Officiates at patients’ memorial/funeral service as requested.
  • Participates in bereavement events as needed.

Cross-cultural care:

  • Demonstrates awareness of cross-cultural issues.
  • Provides culturally sensitive care.
  • Utilizes translation services when appropriate.

Age-specific care:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of human growth and development.
  • Conducts age appropriate assessment.

  • Uses appropriate communication techniques.
  • Recognizes age -specific responses to treatment.

Patient education:

  • Involves patient and family.

Computer Skills:

Knowledge of basic typing skills, data entry and word processing software. Database software and

general knowledge of e-mail is preferred.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and / or Experience:

M.Div. (Master of Divinity) or Master’s degree in theology, pastoral ministry or pastoral counseling,. A

minimum of 3-4 years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education

and experience. A minimum of one full unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or to complete CPE

training in the first 18 months of employment.

Language Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical

procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and

procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of

managers, clients, customers, and the general public. If fluent in a language in addition to English,

and this is required for the position, the title of Chaplain Specialist will be used.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common

fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an

extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract

and concrete variables.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Valid Florida Driver’s License required.
