Job Description

A Certified Ophthalmic Technician provides quality patient care by assisting the Ophthalmologist in examinations and performs preliminary exams and diagnostic testing as requested by the doctor. The Certified Ophthalmic Technician follows Madison Medical specific standards of practice, policies and procedures and supports the philosophy by incorporating them into the clinic. This position reports to the Clinic Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Escorts patients to the exam room as scheduled, completes medical and ocular history through appropriate documentation.

  • Performs preliminary testing and enter exam findings into electronic health records (EHR)

  • Scans documents into patient EHR and monitors ‘to do’ list

  • Keeps up with the flow of operational needs to ensure the best and timely care for patients – manages phone calls and messages efficiently, checks EHR and email regularly, handles prior authorizations and refills, schedules appointments and effectively triages phone calls.

  • Organizes and prepares exam rooms and maintains a clean, safe, and well stocked environment.

  • Inventories and orders contact lenses and surgical kits

  • Cleans and calibrates instruments and equipment

  • Provides patient education on a wide variety of ocular health issues.

  • Ability to dispense contact lenses to both established and new wearers

  • Ability to neutralize contact lenses and eyeglasses

  • Updates medication lists, files prior authorizations for refill requests and refills medications according to protocols or as directed by the doctor

  • Keeps doctor, patient and co-workers appraised of wait times

  • Works with the Surgical Coordinator regarding Cataract and LASIK patients

  • Processes lab specimens and biopsies

  • Performs Pentacam, OCT Visual Field Testing

  • Performs Biometrics, including A-Scan, B-scan and Immersion

  • Performs refractions

  • Performs tonometry

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Current CPR certification

  • Current COT certification

  • 1-2 years of related experience in Medical Assistant or Optician/Optometry preferred

  • Excellent interpersonal and phone skills

  • Ability to evaluate and process urgent situations

  • Ability to maintain composure while meeting patient needs with empathy and concern

  • Demonstrated competence in data entry and ability to work with computer applications

  • Customer service experience in an environment with significant and frequent opportunities to effectively resolve problems and conflict situations

  • Ability to work in a team environment

  • Ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment while maintaining a high level of attention to detail

  • Ability to plan, organize and time manage daily duties
