Job Summary
Assists in examination and treatment of patients under direction of Physician.
Job Duties:
(1) Interviews patients, measures vital signs, such as pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height, and records all other
information on patients' charts.
(2) Prepares treatment rooms for examination of patients.
(3) Drapes patients with covering and positions instruments and equipment.
(4) Hands instruments and materials to doctor as directed.
(5) Cleans and sterilizes instruments.
(6) Inventories and orders medical supplies and materials.
(7) Operates electrocardiograph (EKG), and other equipment to administer routine diagnostic test or calls medical facility or
department to schedule patients for tests.
(8) Gives injections or treatments, and performs routine laboratory tests.
(9) Schedules appointments, keeps x-ray and other medical records, performs secretarial tasks,
and completes insurance forms.
(10) Keys data into computer to maintain office and patient records.

Education/Experience:
Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; OR six months to one year related experience and/or training; OR equivalent combination of education and experience to be determined by Practice Manager.
Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software; Internet software and Database software.

Medical Assistant Scope of Practice:
Physicians may delegate a reasonable scope of clinical procedures (including venipuncture and intramuscular, intradermal, and subcutaneous injections) to competent and knowledgeable medical assistants working under their direct supervision. Procedures which constitute the practice of medicine, or which state law specifically and unambiguously permits only certain licensed health care professionals to perform, however, may not be delegated to unlicensed personnel such as medical assistants.
Only medical assistants who have been granted the certified medical Assistant (CMA) (AAMA) credential may give verbal and/or telephone orders to registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs)
Written orders: (Again, only CMA or AAMA certified MA’s may give written/verbal orders)
The RN or LPN may accept orders which have been entered on the patient’s record by the aforementioned health care professionals, provided the nurse adheres to the following stipulations:
- The licensure status of the health care professional must be identified
- the order must be written on the appropriate form and must include the name of the physician involved and the name and title of the persons recording
The order must be signed by the appropriate physician within 24 hours.
