Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in hand by position start date.
  • Experience of one year in academic advising, including advising in a college and/or advising in individualized higher education, non-traditional education, or similar, related experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to integrating equity awareness into work practices and ability to support students with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to build meaningful relationships in an education setting with a large and diverse student, staff, and faculty population.

Additional Required Qualifications for Senior Academic Advisor (9707):

  • Minimum three years of experience in student counseling and advising or a closely related field.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in higher education and student affairs, college student personnel psychology, counseling, social work, or field related to advising.
  • Two to five years of progressively responsible experience providing college level academic advising.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the career development process and experience supporting undergraduate students in their career journey.
  • Educational project development experience.
  • Experience with database programs. Familiarity with PeopleSoft system, Google apps for business, APLUS, UM Reports, APAS.

Position Overview:
CEHD academic advisors holistically guide, challenge, and support students on making important reflective decisions about major, personal, and career aspirations while also identifying institutional barriers that impede student progress and advocating/facilitating change. Our advising model emphasizes a strong responsibility to diversity, equity, and inclusivity within the context of student progress and development. We seek professionals who can communicate and develop relationships effectively with faculty, students and colleagues, who can expertly advocate for students and solve problems, are flexible in responding to change and changing situations, are committed to integrating equity minded awareness into their work, and can function both independently and collaboratively.

Advisors work with students throughout the undergraduate cycle from undeclared/undecided advising to advising students in CEHD majors through graduation. CEHD majors include Business and Marketing Education, Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Family Social Science, Human Resource Development, Kinesiology, Special Education, Sport Management, and Youth Studies. This role will also act as a departmental liaison for at least one major and will have a caseload between 250-275 students. This position reports to the Associate Director of Academic Advising.

Job Responsibilities:

Academic Advising (65%)

  • Identify, understand, and apply student development theory to guide students to reflect on important decisions that challenge and support their progress while also adapting advising methods to support their individual and diverse needs.
  • Utilizing a holistic advising model, guide, challenge, and support students in becoming self-reliant to make important and reflective academic, personal and career decisions.
  • Interpret, uphold, and communicate policies established by the University of Minnesota to students and faculty; influence how decisions are made using equity minded thinking in application of those policies.
  • Influence retention and degree progress by developing strong relationships and trust with students through numerous and varying developmental contact methods across their academic lifespan.
  • Guide students through the process of formulating personalized educational plans and strategies for academic success that are reflective of their unique set of values, strengths, interests, and identities.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of careers services and integrate its importance in the undergraduate student experience into advising interactions.
  • Employ analytical reviews of student progress reports at key academic markers, such as probation, degree application, or major declaration.
  • Use APLUS, PeopleSoft, APAS, and other software information systems to maintain accurate information about student interactions in order to best support the student as they navigate campus.
  • Coach students on making registration choices that promote timely and realistic degree progress while also fitting within the structure of the degree requirements and their interests.
  • Deliver new student orientation programming designed to provide a seamless, productive, welcoming, and individualized entry to the majors and college.
  • Acknowledge difference while demonstrating ability to work effectively with students with diverse needs and backgrounds and to apply their cultural contexts within the context of their academic and personal development.
  • Utilize and build relationships and networks that make a large university manageable for all students and to ensure a student’s ability to make sufficient progress and feel a sense of belonging.
  • Promote and champion the value of engagement, education, and curricular requirements to help students be successful.
  • Using expert knowledge of University policies, unit procedures and practices, curriculum, and resources, help students navigate the university and determine when exceptions to practices may be appropriate.
  • Offer a sustained, high level of voiced student advocacy in order to directly impact student retention and degree progress.

Student Services Advising Lead (20%)

  • Serve as a lead liaison to departmental major(s).
  • Create and maintain productive working relationships with departmental staff and faculty.
  • Provide assessment and guidance regarding undergraduate curriculum development, pre-major to major orientation processes, policies and procedures, and individual student issues.
  • Provide coaching and expertise regarding student relationships, resources, barriers to progress, access, understanding undergraduate student needs and the student experience.
  • Identify and resolve enrollment management issues as they arise in terms of course access, availability, and impact on student degree progress and develop tracking mechanisms to improve barriers.
  • Influence and advocate in the development of major declaration and admission standards.
  • Consult in developing student-facing communication tools specific to the major.
  • Support creation and implementation of additional workshops/resources for students in CEHD majors.

Program Service & Development (15%)

  • Teach one section of EDHD 1701 (Identity, Culture and College Success) each academic year for CEHD non-TRIO President’s Emerging Scholars. Teaching duties of the course include: delivering weekly instruction, the creation and management of a Canvas course site, evaluating and grading assignments providing clear feedback to students, and scheduling guest speakers and presenters.
  • Participate in curriculum development and training for the EDHD 1701 course annually.
  • Using an equity minded awareness, recommend and implement creative approaches and practices to accomplish academic advising goals, to improve procedures and systems, and to impact policy.
  • Take on formal or informal leadership roles within the department, college, or across campus and as appropriate delegates tasks and decisions in these roles.
  • Coordinate major advising efforts with career services initiatives.
  • Stay abreast of current trends and philosophies in academic advising, engage in scholarly or creative activities in the areas of advising, academic progress, curricular materials development, and service delivery.
  • Participate in professional development events and activities in the unit, College, University, and/or broader community.
  • Serve on Student Services, College and University-wide committees as requested.
  • Participate in college recruitment events.
