Department or School Site The Inspection Department provides professional quality assurance and
regulatory support for the Facilities Services Division’s school
construction projects. This support is provided by experienced Inspection
Department staff with backgrounds in public school construction,
architecture, engineering contracting, general construction and
specialized crafts.

Job Duties/Responsibilities A Building/Construction Inspector for the Los Angeles Unified School
District performs continuous inspection of contract school construction
for compliance with plans, specifications, and contract documents.
Extensive driving is required in fulfilling responsibilities.
Core duties include:
- Performing continuous inspection of wood frame, reinforced concrete,
plans, specifications, contract documents, and all applicable State and
local building codes, ordinances and regulations.
- Analyzing plans, specifications, and contract documents and interprets
subcontractors.
- Notifying architects, engineers and project teams of material or work
documents or applicable codes.
- Coordinating and monitoring the on and off-site work of specialized
control of all issued reports.
- Maintaining daily reports of construction progress, site activity, and

Minimum Requirements Education: Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent
educational proficiency is required.
College semester units or equivalent quarter units from a recognized
college or university in the areas of architecture, engineering,
construction management, and construction technology are preferable.
Special: Building/Construction Inspectors must possess and maintain
certification as a Class 1, Class 2 or Class 3 General Inspector by the
Division of the State Architect (DSA).
A valid California Driver License.
Use of an automobile.
Desirable Qualifications The ideal candidate will place priority on actions and results, follow
through on tasks to project completion, keep all involved parties
informed, and will have:
- Exceptional industry knowledge, which includes a full working
masonry and concrete as it relates to construction; thorough
understanding of the California Code of Regulations, Title 24 and
applicable ordinances and regulations related to California public school
construction and safety; and demonstrated skill in reading and
interpreting blueprints, specifications, codes, and contract documents.
- Construction field experience such as project superintendent,
tradesperson sufficient to realize the type and extent of contractor
performance required for regulatory compliance.
- Exceptional project management skills to work independently; stay
track daily construction progress; and coordinate specialized inspectors,
materials testing (such as soil, lumber, concrete and steel), and survey
crews at construction sites.
- Strong fact finding and decision making skills to determine required
parties, and follow through within the chain of command with information
to resolve work related issues and find workable solutions.
- Strong interpersonal skills to ensure good working relationships with
ability to handle conflict within the project team; and the ability to lead
fairly and effectively.
- Additional certifications from the Division of State Architect (DSA),
Construction Inspector Association (ACIA) are preferable.
