Job Description
Cashiers generally work in enclosed ticket booths, where they sell tickets, make change, answer questions about show times and provide details about the films being shown. These workers sometimes assist the manager by counting cash and performing basic record keeping as directed. Cashiers may post ticket prices and change signs. Cashiers may also answer the phone.
In some theaters cashiers may double as ticket takers who stand in the lobby near the main entrance and take tickets from patrons. They may also double as Ushers. Ushers show patrons to their seats, help patrons find lost items and attempt to control unruly behavior. Ushers deal with food or drink spills and check restrooms. Ushers set-up barriers to hold back those waiting to see the show and keep order. In a crisis, ushers keep order and help to prevent panic. If necessary they direct patrons to exit the theater in and orderly fashion.
To perform the job, a cashier must be able to speak clearly, hear of lip read adequately and the manual dexterity to make change, operate ticketing equipment, cash machines and change box office sign boards.
Ticket takers and ushers must be able to maneuver up and down the aisles and inside each row of seats; open auditorium doors and be able to assist patrons and their needs. They are required to reach, bend and lift with cleaning the auditoriums as well as they assist in maintenance of the theater. They may need to climb a ladder to change film titles on the marquee or replace light bulbs. Ticket takers/ushers should be able to be on their feet during the entire working period, have a clear voice for giving instruction, possess good telephone skills for when people call for information, be able to hear or lip read adequately and have the physical strength to help others in the event of an emergency.
Additional job requirements:
Employee must be able to read, write and receive instructions and communicate in English; must be able to stand up to at least 4 hours at a time; must be able to lift up to 50 pounds; and must be able to use a ladder or other means to clean and/or change signs.
