REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

All,

Installs, tests, repairs, calibrates and maintains medical equipment. Investigates equipment failures; performs troubleshooting to isolate and diagnose problems; identifies, locates, resolves, and repairs equipment and devices. Investigates intermittent problems; maintains accurate service records; documents and maintains accurate records of all inspections, repairs, adjustments, etc. performed on all equipment; updates database of equipment identification, location, status, reliability, and service documentation.

Participates in both internal and external educational programs through professional associations, technical training courses, and seminars to develop and maintain the required current technical aptitude. Interacts with manufacturer’s representatives to obtain the necessary technical product information. Requests and/or orders necessary repair and spare parts according to established procedures and contract relationships. Provides operational and technical advice on equipment to medical and clinical staff when needed. Interacts with clinical staff on a regular basis to insure needs are being met.

Lifts, carries and/or pushes/pulls various items (bags, boxes, carts, etc.) while utilizing proper technique. Complies with all ANTHC safety policies and procedures, Federal Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations, and departmental policies and procedures.

Performs other duties as assigned. May provide similar services across the Region. The incumbent is responsible for adhering to established Standards of Courtesy and/or Service Standards.

Biomedical Equipment Repair Assistant

• Under general supervision, analyzes, troubleshoots and repairs simple electromechanical diagnostic and therapeutic medical devices utilizing established electronic test and measurement equipment and techniques.
• Assists with installation, calibration, and testing of new simple electromechanical medical electronic devices and/or systems. Performs scheduled preventative maintenance on simple electromechanical medical electronic devices in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendation, applicable codes, standards, and department policy. Conducts scheduled and unscheduled electrical and functional safety inspections on simple electromechanical medical devices.

Biomedical Equipment Repair Technician I

Under general supervision analyzes, troubleshoots, and repairs diagnostic and therapeutic medical devices utilizing established electronic test and measurement equipment and techniques.

• Assists with the installation, calibration and testing of new medical devices and/or systems. Performs scheduled preventative maintenance on medical electronic devices and/or systems. Conducts scheduled and unscheduled electrical and functional safety inspections on medical electronic devices.
• Acts as a resource on more technical issues and mentors Biomedical Assistants to help them grow in ability, responsibility, and experience.

Biomedical Equipment Repair Technician II

Analyzes, troubleshoots, and repairs diagnostic and therapeutic medical devices utilizing established electronic test and measurement equipment and techniques.

• Installs, calibrates, and tests new medical electronic devices and/or systems. Performs scheduled preventive maintenance on medical electronic devices in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendation, applicable codes, standards, and department policy. Conducts scheduled and unscheduled electrical and functional safety inspections on medical devices.
• Trains medical and clinical staff on the safe and proper use of medical electronic devices and systems. Acts as a resource on more complex technical biomedical equipment issues and mentors Biomedical Equipment Technician I’s and Biomedical Assistants to help them grow in ability, responsibility, and experience.
• Modifies existing electronic devise and systems to meet the special needs of the user in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.
• Makes recommendations for capital equipment replacements to Manager of Biomedical Engineering.

Biomedical Equipment Repair Technician III

• Analyzes, troubleshoots and repairs highly complex diagnostic and therapeutic medical devices utilizing established electronic test and measurement equipment, and techniques.
• Installs, calibrates, and tests highly complex new medical electronic devices and/or systems. Performs scheduled preventative maintenance on highly complex medical electronic devices in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations, applicable codes, standards and department policy. Conducts scheduled and unscheduled electrical and functional safety inspections on highly complex medical devices.
• Trains medical staff on the safe and proper use of highly complex medical electronic devices and systems. Provides technical support and assistance to clinical staff in their use of highly complex diagnostic and therapeutic devices in area of expertise. Provides operation and technical advice on highly complex equipment to medical staff. Interacts with clinical staff on a regular basis to insure needs are being met. Acts as a resource on highly complex, technical issues and mentors Biomedical Equipment Tech I’s, Biomedical Equipment Technician II’s, and Biomedical Assistants to help them grow in ability, responsibility, and experience.
• Assists with the training of technicians and quality control checks on the equipment repaired.
• Assists in the development of policies and procedures related to equipment maintenance and use.
• Assists in research projects and/or new Biomedical equipment evaluations. May participate in design and construction projects. Modifies highly complex existing electronic devices and systems to meet the special needs of the user in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations. Makes recommendations for capital replacements to primaries.

KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS

• Knowledge of medical electronics equipment hardware and software systems and communications devices.
• Knowledge of electronic equipment functions, repair procedures, codes and standards.
• Knowledge of computer networks and telecommunications equipment infrastructure.
• Knowledge of safety policies and procedures, and OSHA rules and regulations.
• Skill in assessing, analyzing, identifying and implementing solutions to technical problems.
• Skill in reading technical diagrams and manuals.
• Skill in using the techniques, tools and test equipment for troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of electronic equipment.
• Skill in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.
• Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications Basic proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office or similar products (primarily Word and Excel)
• Valid state driver’s license required
• Use of personal vehicle for travel to various sites is required/expected

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

Biomedical Equipment Repair Assistant

• High School Diploma

Biomedical Equipment Repair Technician I, II, & III

• Associate Degree in Electronics (preferably biomedical) or equivalent biomedical military training. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for education.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

Biomedical Equipment Repair Assistant

• Non-supervisory – None

Biomedical Equipment Repair Technician I

• Non-supervisory – None

Biomedical Equipment Repair Technician II

• Non-supervisory – Three (3) years of progressively complex (troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, design and modification) hospital-based Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) experience required. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.

Biomedical Equipment Repair Technician III

• Non-supervisory - Five (5) years of medical instrumentation repair and/or maintenance experience including at least two with specialized imaging equipment such as ultrasound, MR CT, or x-ray. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.

PREFERRED CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION

Biomedical Equipment Repair Technician II

• ICC, CBET

Biomedical Equipment Repair Technician III

• ICC, CBET, CLES strongly preferred

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• May require occasional travel to remote locations by boat, snowmobile, ATV or small plane. May be exposed to extreme weather conditions.
• May be required to work outside the traditional work schedule.
• May be called out to work off-shift in emergency situations.
• Position requires travel. May be exposed to road and weather hazards.

WORKING CONDITIONS
The following demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:

• Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. from floor to waist and up to 30 lbs. overhead.
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 lbs. at waist height a reasonable distance.
• Must be able to push with 50 lbs. of force and pull with 40 lbs. of force.
• ANMC is not a latex free facility; an employee should expect to work in an environment where latex may be present.
• Walks the majority of the workday as well as stands, sits, lifts, bends, and reaches above shoulders throughout.
• Working environment may contain dust/dirt, fumes and odors.
• Exposed to mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards as well as blood and body fluids. As a result, protective clothing must be worn as necessary.
• Position requires travel. May be exposed to road and weather hazards.
