Job Description Summary
CaFE Centers at Cuesta College, comprised of CalWORKS, Foster Youth and EOPS/CARE programs is seeking a Full-Time Tenure-Track CaFE Counselor. CaFE Centers and its programs provide comprehensive services to historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students in order to increase their sense of belonging, self-efficacy, and awareness of opportunities to help students achieve their academic and personal goals. While the successful candidate's primary responsibility will be to counsel and meet with EOPS/CARE/CalWORKs/Foster Youth students through the calendar year, the successful candidate will also be expected to serve the college and department in various capacities, outlined further below.

COUNSELOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Assigned to the CaFE Centers and meet with a culturally diverse student population participating in EOPS/CARE/CalWORKs/Foster Youth program(s);
Provide innovative approaches and engage in the recruitment, orientation, registration, and retention of students, informing them of Cuesta College's degree, certificate, vocational, and transfer opportunities;
Provide students with culturally competent academic and personal counseling that will stimulate them to grow in the understanding of self and others, preparing them to become engaged citizens;
Assist with tracking, scheduling and follow-up of required student contacts, including but not limited to maintaining documentation of counseling-related activities;
Support students to identify and clarify their educational goals and provide guided exploration and pathway maps to those goals;
Utilize degree audit system, other appropriate technology, and websites when counseling students and developing Student Education Plans (SEP);
Provide referrals to academic and student support services;
Provide follow-up and support to students with unsatisfactory academic progress;
Participate in accreditation, program review, and processes for institutional planning, including but not limited to the support of Counseling department Student Service Outcomes (SSO) development and assessment;
Continually improve counseling skills, maintain currency with transfer articulation agreements, transfer policies, and technology tools;
Establish and maintain a schedule of regular counseling opportunities for students (i.e.: individual, group, hybrid, and on-line);
Demonstrate proficiency and assist students with on-line counseling resources;
Develop working relationships with and communicate information to counseling personnel, academic departments, local area high schools, the community;
Assume the responsibility as a faculty member for accomplishing the goals of Cuesta College;
Be cognizant of the mission, goals, and objectives of Cuesta College, using them as broad guidelines in counseling and assisting students;
Adhere to the regularly established work week as established by the administration. Assignments may be day, evening, weekend or online at the San Luis Obispo Campus, North County Campus in Paso Robles, or other sites within San Luis Obispo County. The Ideal Candidate:

Selected applicants will be asked to interview via Zoom for a full-time tenure track position as a CaFE Counselor in the Student Success and Support Programs Division on either Tuesday, April 13 or Wednesday, April 14, 2021. Second interviews will be held via Zoom on Thursday, April 15, 2021. The selected applicant will begin their full-time counselor/coordinator assignment in the 2021-2022 school year which begins July 1, 2021.

Essential Functions & Qualifications

Required:
  • Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development from an accredited institution;
AND
  • Completed a minimum of nine semester units of college course work predominantly relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages; OR -Completed six semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling field-work courses in a community college EOPS program, or in a program dealing predominantly with ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages; AND
  • Two (2) years of occupational experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages;
AND
  • Bilingual Spanish and English (oral and written);
OR -The equivalent (candidates making application on the basis of equivalency must submit all materials requested for an equivalency judgment, indicated on the Equivalency Process link listed in Additional Information); OR -A valid Community College credential in the discipline.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Subject Matter Preparation

Preference will be given to candidates who:
Have recent successful experience counseling at the California Community College level;
Experience counseling underrepresented community college students during the last four years;
Well qualified to counsel a diverse student population;
Professional work experience in the field of counseling, including excellence in written an oral communication;
Strong preparation in evaluation of transcripts, research and articulation;
Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students;
Evidence of Outstanding Ability as a Counselor
Appropriate evidence includes, but is not limited to experience, training or achievement that the candidate has:
Commitment to staying up-to-date with the latest developments in counseling and in collaborating with community organizations and/or professional organizations and partnership development;
The ability to continuously evaluate and improve counseling methods;
The ability to use counseling methods that engage students actively in their own learning, promote of critical thinking skills, and encourage them to become lifelong learners;
The ability to use counseling methods that emphasize cooperation and collaboration and that reflect cultural sensitivity;
The ability to motivate students from a broad spectrum of cultural, academic, socioeconomic and language backgrounds;
Familiarity with and willingness to expand the use of technology in counseling, including online counseling;
Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, the mission and objectives of the California Community Colleges;
Evidence of commitment to, and active participation in, professional development in the field of counseling.
Evidence of Effectiveness as a Colleague
The ability, initiative and commitment to work collaboratively with faculty and staff in the spirit of collegiality and innovation to enhance counseling and promote student success and completion;
Commitment to professional responsibilities outside of counseling sessions through enthusiastic contributions to the department, division and college activities.
Desirable Qualifications
Recent experience working with racially minoritized and other disproportionately-impacted students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and particular fields shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
Willingness to examine and remediate one's counseling practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized and other disproportionately impacted students;
Experience and skill with addressing inequity in the division and on campus;
Experience and expertise in culturally-responsive counseling;
Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps;
Demonstrated knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving Institution designation for institutional, departmental and instructional practices;
Knowledge of counseling and guidance principles, techniques and procedures; academic requirements for community college and transfer to four-year institutions; community college onboarding processes, job market, career trends and requirements, electronic data entry and record keeping practices;
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with individuals and in making presentations to groups;
Ability to work with and assist students having a great range of skills, motivation, and educational goals; review and evaluate counseling needs and formulate recommendations as appropriate; work with underrepresented students.
