The Nurse Practitioner position for the Student Health Center (SHC) at Jacksonville University is a 10-month (August 1 through May 31) full-time (5 days/week) exempt position. This individual will work as an autonomous licensed provider to offer comprehensive medical care to undergraduate and graduate students who attend Jacksonville University.
Essential Job Duties
- Functioning as an autonomous provider to the full scope of practice in compliance with the Florida Nurse Practice Act.
- Using evidenced-based guidelines and recommendations, provide medical services that include, but are not limited to:
- diagnosis and treatment of common primary care medical illnesses
- acute, episodic, and chronic disease management
- preventative health screenings and physical exams for health promotion
- women’s health services
- injury evaluation
- immunization
- Order and interpret laboratory, radiological and diagnostic tests.
- Instruct and counsel patients regarding prescription medications, birth control, pregnancy, STIs, ETOH and substance abuse, COVID and other health and wellness topics.
- Perform pelvic exams, pap smears, minor procedures, and laceration repair.
- Prescribe appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment based on clinical evaluation.
- Accurately determine if a patient’s condition is beyond the scope of care provided at the SHC and initiate referral(s) to the appropriate specialist(s).
- Assist with on-campus health education programing and support efforts to educate the student body on wellness, well-being and responsible decision making.
- Support the Keigwin School of Nursing by precepting nurse practitioner students and acting as an educational resource for undergraduate nursing students in the SHC.
- Participate in SHC quality improvement activities and clinical research as requested by the Executive Director of the SHC.
- Serve and participate in staff meetings and other SHC committees.
- Perform any other duties relating to the business of the SHC that may be assigned by the Executive Director.

- Excellent clinical assessment skills with ability to accurately document and report the evaluation
- Knowledge of and the ability to apply fundamental concepts related to HIPPA/FERPA regulations and privacy practices
Work Conditions
- Work is primarily indoors but requires incumbent to be in an outdoor environment when traveling between campus buildings or engaging in relevant outreach activities.
- Standard work hours are M-F, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with June and July off.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift and carry equipment or supplies weighing up to 30 pounds.
- Adequate hearing to communicate effectively in person or by phone.
- Must be able to show proof of immunization against Hepatitis B and MMR
Prerequisites Required for Position
Minimum Education Requirement
- Current/Valid Florida Nurse Practitioner Autonomous Practice License (or at least meet the 3000 hours of supervised clinical practice requirement to apply for an autonomous license)
- Diploma related to professional licensure, master’s degree or higher preferred.
- Certification by ANCC or AANP as an FNP, ANP or AGPCNP
- Education and/or experience in the field of young adult, student and women’s health
- CPR/AED Certified
Minimum Work Experience
- 3-5 years of experience as a nurse practitioner in a primary care, urgent care or emergency room.
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse student groups.
- Able to successfully pass a background check.
