Job Summary


The Automation and Controls Technician B is responsible for the maintenance and repairs of Passenger Boarding Bridges (PBB) and automated equipment and systems. The Automation and Controls Technician B will also be directly responsible for, and not limited to, the maintenance/repairs of automated electrical systems of , ROAM/Virticus/nLight LED lighting and other main and LED lighting controller type systems, automated gate access systems, hydraulic barricade systems, baggage conveyors, irrigation systems, power generation systems and transfer switch equipment, and other complex machinery for the CPA cruise terminals, cargo terminals and other facilities, as well as playing a key role in the refurbishment of existing facilities and commissioning of new facilities. The Automation and Controls Technician B may lead and direct Automation Controls Technician A.


Essential Functions


  • Highly skilled in a variety of disciplines involving the electrical and mechanical field
  • High safety awareness and knowledge of OSHA requirements preferably in a Maritime environment
  • Experience working with control systems, including PLC knowledge and software
  • Electrical construction skills including conduit pipe threading, installing raceways, pulling wire, splicing and terminating devices
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems and devices
  • Safely work with electrical equipment of voltages 480 VAC and lower with the use of multiple types of electrical meters
  • Usage, reference, and adherence to latest National Electrical Code
  • Troubleshoot and repair advanced control systems for lighting, LED lighting, baggage conveyor systems, PBB systems, support for HVAC systems, and other equipment throughout the Port
  • Control, with minor repair service of, the power generation and transfer switch equipment throughout the Port
  • Troubleshoot automated equipment using a laptop computer and remote connections with knowledge of networking
  • Repair and troubleshoot VFD's and motor controls
  • Investigate and repair various types of mechanical systems associated with hydraulic and electro-mechanical systems preferably on PBB's
  • Safely operate high reach boom lifts (up to 180'), scissor lifts, forklifts, large trucks with trailers, and other large construction related equipment.
  • Safely operate all power tools and equipment utilized in electrical, construction repair, installation of hydraulic and electro-mechanical systems, diagnosis and troubleshooting systems
  • Work from a Maintenance Management Work Order System capturing all work and PM services including designating work orders to others
  • Rigging and safe movement of heavy loads and equipment
  • Other duties as assigned
  • During emergency conditions, all CPA employees are automatically considered essential employees and may be subject to recall. These events may include, but are not limited to, natural, man-made, or public health emergencies. Employees may be expected to perform emergency and/or recovery operations outside of their normal assigned responsibilities and routine working hours.


Minimum Qualifications:


  • Associates degree from an accredited college, university, trade school or successful completion of comparable automation type technical education preferred
  • Seven years or more of hands-on electrical/mechanical maintenance or service experience in an industrial/heavy commercial environment or with industrial automated equipment required
  • Journeyman Electrical license or higher preferred
  • Building Automation knowledge is preferred
  • Passenger Boarding Bridges or similar equipment is preferred
  • Experienced with Phillips color kinetics-LSI-Virticus/ROAM/Rialto- Cooper-Solera/STICK- Acuity nLight -lighting systems (Lighting Automation) preferred
  • Must possess Intermediate level knowledge and proficiency in blueprint and electrical schematic comprehension skills
  • Networking experience and use of networked systems is preferred
  • Must be a team player able to perform in a fast-paced high-pressure environment, be flexible, a self-starter, and work effectively and efficiently with limited supervision
  • Must possess excellent customer service focused communication skills and the ability to prioritize tasks
  • Intermediate level of computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel


Licenses / Certification Required:


  • Possess a valid Florida Driver’s License
  • Able to secure a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)


Physical Requirements:


  • Ability to perform physical aspects of the job such as lifting and handling up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, 30-40 lbs. frequently, and or up to 10 lbs. of force to constantly move objects
  • Tasks involve the intermittent performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching above shoulders, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and standing for extended periods
  • Ability to safely and comfortably climb stairs/ladders and work at heights and from equipment platforms (up to 180’ ship to shore container cranes and PBB's not on a consistent basis)
  • Ability to safely and comfortably work in confined spaces
  • Ability to carry tools/equipment for long distances


Environmental Requirements:


  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying temperatures and weather conditions
  • Ability to work at heights beyond 100' and above or over bodies of water/other surfaces
  • Must be able to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and possible overtime
