Job Description

The Athletic Trainer is a skilled professional employee who coordinates athletic services at high school level and works under the direction of Physician and supervision of the appointed supervisor of outpatient Physical Therapy. This professional is a specially trained employee with specific skills pertaining to athletic services, prevention, conditioning and rehab. In the clinic setting, the Athletic Trainer assists the Physical Therapist in the treatment and progression of the patient. He/she may assist with the initial evaluation, the re-eval, and should be available to offer suggestions on treatment procedures for orthopedic injury of previously normal extremity joints (i.e. athletic injury. Unlike other support staff the athletic trainer is able to assess extremity joints and assist the P.T. in patient evaluation. The ATC is accountable for a patient load under the supervision of a physical therapist.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Independently at the school, develops and implements appropriate sport conditioning program and treatment plan for injured athletes. Coverage of appropriate sporting events as determined by the Athletic director (AD) and the Athletic trainer (ATC).
  • Collaborates with intra and inter-disciplinary teams regarding the care of the athlete.
  • Educate student athletes, coaches and parents on a proper treatment protocol.
  • Accurately documents athletic activities / injuries.
  • Promotes hospital and all of it's departments.
  • Maintains verbal, written and electronic communication and collaborates with interdisciplinary treatment team, referral sources, physicians, and 3rd party payors.
  • Participates in leadership functions: community outreach, CQI, marketing, cost containment, program development, AT student supervision; teaches staff, physicians and others.
  • Professional development: Attends staff meetings; maintains and improves competence through self-study, attending in-services and continuing education programs. Clinical education to students.
  • Implement an appropriate treatment plan for each patient. Accurately documents treatments and charges for self and assigned support staff.
  • Serve as a resource of information and treatment skill for less knowledgeable staff, provide student supervision.
  • Manage staff and department resources wisely. Supervise assigned support staff.
  • Collaborate with intra and interdisciplinary team members regarding patient care. Collaborates with patient, family, significant other in treatment and in discharge planning.
  • Provide documentation to the physicians regarding the patient initially, at discharge, and at appropriate intervals. Discusses changes to the prescribed program with the physician before initiation.
  • Athletic Trainer maintains good standing with the licensure/regulatory board and all applicable laws/rules/regulations.

STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree from a program approved by the National Athletic Trainers Association. Maintains continuing education units per NATA policy. Master's Degree preferred.
  • Certification, Licensure, Registration: Michigan State License as Athletic Trainer required. BLS certification from the American Heart Association. NATA certification.
