Associate Director, Development Communications

Job Summary:
The Associate Director of Development Communications works in the Office of Development Communications to develop and implement the Development Division's communications and marketing strategies, creating communications that educate, engage, cultivate, and inspire philanthropic support and engagement with USF.

The Associate Director's primary responsibilities are to propose, create, and execute new communications and targeted marketing plans for internal and external audiences; to evaluate and elevate existing communications; to drive cross-division collaboration on the timing of communications to ensure well-timed engagement with key audiences; and to track and measure results.

Reporting to the Director of Development Communications, this position is a key member of the USF Development Communications team and will assist in the implementation of USF's Development Division marketing vision and strategy in alignment with USF's values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Full Job Description:

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Work with clients across the Development Division to create robust and detailed segmented marketing and communications plans to support our strategic philanthropic and engagement goals with target audiences; clients will include, but are not limited to: Alumni Engagement, Special Events, Women in Leadership and Philanthropy, and Gift Planning.
  • In support of the department's content and channel strategy, write both short form content and longer stories. Contribute regularly to the department's newsletters, online content, and story bank, researching and writing stories that highlight the impact of giving to USF.
  • Assist in strategic planning of the Development Communications editorial calendar, based on web analytics data and newsletter open rates, to make the case for content that is engaging and relevant; work with colleagues in Development Communications to plan content that is in support of the goals and strategies of internal clients.
  • Oversee all strategy and decision-making on web content on behalf of the Development Division-owned web pages. Serve as liaison between web services and Development and advise colleagues in Development on best practices for content, style, brand alignment, and coordination with university-wide messaging strategy. Directly write or manage contributors who create web stories, video, and photography; facilitate web content and story publication. Monitor all development-owned websites for content accuracy and consistency and serve as primary web leader for /giving, /campaign, /alumni, /women, and any other Development-managed USF pages. Become certified in USF content management system as needed.
  • Edit and fact-check external content (stories, web content, emails, social media posts, etc.) for accuracy, functionality, clarity, consistency, brand consistency, and impact, as needed. Review and approve content and messaging created by colleagues outside Development Communications.
  • Regularly monitor web metrics and analytics to evaluate the effectiveness of web content, as well as other communications, to improve engagement. Regularly report out on key metrics. Support other analytics-related projects as assigned.
  • Lead and manage monthly meetings to discuss marketing and communications planning; and coordinate calendars, key messaging, audience, and timing. Lead regular communications meetings with all Development stakeholders to ensure education and implementation of best practices across the division and with our campus partners.
  • Represent Development Communications in division-wide data working groups, such as Salesforce Affinaquest
  • Attend division-wide meetings and Development Communications meetings
  • Manage and assign projects to one or more student interns; assign projects to contract/freelance writers and/or a Development Communications Coordinator (yet to be hired).
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in digital media, marketing, communications, journalism, public relations, or related field.
  • Five or more years of professional experience in content creation and digital content management, with the ability to think from a user's perspective when organizing, creating, and maintaining content.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and execute best practices in content management and digital communications, including the integration of multiple channels to reach target audiences with desired messages and outcomes
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with experience in both long and short form writing as well as interviewing. Must be a creative thinker and storyteller with the ability to use words and visuals to motivate and excite audiences.
  • Project management expertise; ability to manage multiple projects for various purposes on schedule with attention to consistency of overall messaging and design. Must be able to see the big picture while also delivering on the details.
  • Demonstrated experience in tracking and reporting on key metrics and campaign results. Responsive to data-driven decision making.
  • Collaborative relationship-builder and problem-solver who enjoys working on teams and with subject matter experts.
  • Passion for working in a diverse, multi-cultural environment and for the mission of USF.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills and implement new ideas.
  • Understanding of content management systems, and demonstrated ability in digital content and user experience management best practices.
  • Proficient in Google Suite and Microsoft products

Additional Skills, Knowledge & Abilities desired but not required for position
  • Experience working in higher education development or philanthropy.
  • Knowledge of design software, such as Photoshop, InDesign or Illustrator.
  • Knowledge of project management systems, such as Asana and Slack
  • Experience with database navigation, such as Salesforce
