Job Description

Kindred at Home is wholly owned by Humana Insurance Corporation, and will complete their integration into Humana by January 2023. As such, Humana is assisting Kindred at Home on this strategic hire, who will report directly into Kindred at Home until that integration is complete.

Kindred at Home (KAH) is the nation’s largest provider of community care, personal home care, home health, palliative, and hospice care. For more than 35 years, Kindred at Home has offered skilled nursing, physical, occupational, and speech therapies, social work, disease management education, hospice, and palliative care services as well as help with daily living activities.

Kindred at Home revenue is nearly $5B and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, with a significant ongoing presence in Mooresville, NC and Kansas City, MO. In a 2018 transaction, Kindred at Home was purchased and owned by TPG Capital, WCAS and Humana (the “consortium”). In April of 2021, Humana purchased TPG’s and WCAS’s interests in the company. Acquiring a national home health agency was integral to Humana’s intent to create a transformative clinical model to serve their members in the home, enabling a greater level of integrated care. The Kindred at Home IT organization is an expanded, optimized and fully integrated organization that runs like a business, delivering IT services and enterprise business processes across all functions. Our technology teams oversee all aspects of delivery for Kindred at Home’s 42,000 + employees who delivery high quality, compassionate care to over 550,000 patients in nearly 800 locations throughout 40 states. The AVP of Clinical Systems will be an integral part of the IT leadership team and will work closely with the CIO and the IT Leadership Team to support the Company’s continued evolution.

The AVP of Clinical System has responsibility for all enterprise-wide IT clinical and clinically related systems, operations, optimization, and advancement. This leader will establish a clinical technology application strategy aligned to KAH Clinical and Operational strategic business needs and will be directly responsible for the execution of that strategy. The individual will be a strong leader focused on coaching and deployment of the Applications team directors and their stakeholders. They will understand the organization’s core IT competencies and the value they bring to the patient, those caring for the patient, and overall business processes to position KAH as a competitive advantage. They will ensure satisfaction with IT related services for both internal and external customers.

This role will communicate at every level of the enterprise, including C-level. Importantly, this role will be the primary leader responsible for working with the Humana Home Segment leadership to ensure that the technologies we’ve deployed, and the technologies being evaluated at Kindred at Home tie directly that overarching strategy.

Responsibilities

The AVP of Clinical Systems will work with the CIO and the Senior IT leadership team to lead the IT drive the planning, operations, optimization, and advancement of clinical technology across the organization. This includes the following:

  • Serve and participate proactively with other members of KAH IT-Senior Operations leadership team in developing and executing strategic and operational IT plans for Clinical Technology

  • Provide inspiration and motivation to the IT Clinical Applications department and all other IT stakeholders to maximize employee engagement

  • Provide coaching and development of the IT Clinical Application team members and aid the managers and directors in their coaching and development of their stakeholders

  • Manage director level IT staff including interviewing, training, assigning, and directing work, performance management, and evaluating job performance

  • Establish and manages effective relationships between business partners and IT leaders

Clinical Systems

  • Provide strategic and tactical planning, development, evaluation, and coordination of the application technology for KAH. It is not expected that the candidate be hands-on; however, the individual should have a technical background and relevant experience to understand, guide, and challenge technical direction within a healthcare environment

  • Provides strategic direction and vision for the future of how the implementation of clinical systems and technology can have a direct impact on the achievement of the overarching strategy and directly improve the lives of the patients we server. Qualified candidate will be well versed in core Electronic Medical Record, Revenue Cycle System, Telemedicine Platforms, Patient Monitoring, Interoperability and data exchange techniques and predictive analytics and algorithms designed to predict adverse events, etc.

  • Oversee operations, configuration and lifecycle management around all deployed clinical technologies referenced above

  • Ensure the continuous delivery of the application project portfolio aligning and prioritizing project delivery based upon patient and business value and governance principles

  • Develop and maintain an application portfolio and roadmap

  • Coordinate, facilitate and consult with appropriate internal customers on information systems, technology, and application systems initiatives

  • Manage multiple process and application systems and projects, including clinical, administrative, financial, and external facing applications

  • Ensure that KAH Clinical applications follow applicable laws, policies, and procedures

  • Ensure appropriate recovery plans are in place, communicated, and tested

  • Participate in policy and decision-making discussions and make recommendations regarding resource allocation and future direction and control of proposed information systems

  • Assess proposed technology projects and recommend appropriate action based on technical guidelines/standards and organizational priorities

Clinical System Program Delivery and Management

  • Accountable for the delivery of key clinical system strategic efforts across all product lines and functions.

  • Ensures all funded and approved projects are delivered on time, with high quality, and within budgetary constraints.

  • Effectively and efficiently measures, monitors, reports, or otherwise controls program/project activities, interdependencies, risks, barriers, other challenges, or issues or opportunities (includes preparing and delivering various senior management presentations or reports on summary of departmental activities, progress, and results.)

  • Identifies and implements best practice methodologies, processes, systems, tools, metrics, and other resources to optimize program/ project success and return on investment.

  • Drives efficient processes to ensure operational efficiencies are realized across multiple cross functional teams.

  • Ensures the long-term sustainability of program and project results thru comprehensive transition to IT Operations (IT operational readiness program).

DESIRED OUTCOMES

In the first 18-24 months the successful candidate will:

  • Embrace Kindred at Home as an organization, align with the culture and engage fully with the leadership team as a trusted partner and advisor.

  • Play a key role in leading the integration of Kindred at Home's home care services into Humana. Finding ways to drive efficiency across the organization, aligning to the broader strategy and driving the required integration change.

  • Complete the development and roll out of a clinical systems strategy and associated road map that successfully aligns, supports and advances the broader Humana Home Solutions strategy.

  • Improve clinical systems offerings associated with the integrated entity; effective management of clinical technology resources and investments, including oversight of resource requirements, budgets and staffing plans, and the management of IT vendors and service providers.

  • Restructure the clinical systems team as necessary and filled key talent gaps on the team.

Education/Experience/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations:

The qualified candidate will possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Administration, or related field. This person ideally has 15 or more years of IT and business/industry work experience, at a minimum 5-7 years in a provider and payor-based healthcare setting, with 7 – 10 years of leadership experience managing multiple, large, cross-functional teams or projects, influencing senior level management and key stakeholders. Additionally:

  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR) operational experience required

  • Experience leading technical operation of revenue cycle systems is preferred

  • Understanding of healthcare industry and ability to translate patient / business needs into technology needs as appropriate is required

  • EMR system selection and implementation experience strongly preferred

  • Exceptional skills in Program and Project management of major IT efforts, including leadership experience at scale with development and transformation, service-oriented architectures/micro-services & cloud transformation.

  • A thorough understanding of business processes, technology, and the range of strategic options available in the pursuit of operational excellence, including targeted outsourcing &/or offshoring of select activities.

  • The successful candidate will possess a wide range of personality traits, work habits and communication and social skills necessary to perform effectively within KAH environment.
