JOB SUMMARY
The Assistant Nurse Manager is a Registered Nurse designated to facilitate the functioning of the unit. The Assistant Nurse Manager demonstrates excellent clinical skills and acts as a resource to the staff. Major components of this role include the ability to coordinate, delegate, communicate and think critically on clinical and operational issues. The Assistant Nurse Manager reports directly to the Unit Manager or designee.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Functions
- Demonstrates a commitment to the mission of Swedish Hospital and demonstrates a service orientation and adheres to all responsibilities and standards of the Hospital.
- Assists and collaborates with the nurse manager in decision-making.
- Functions as a resource person for the nursing staff and medical staff.
- Provides for the development of nursing staff in collaboration with Nurse Manager and Clinical Nurse Educators using adult learning principles.
- Accepts accountability for the delivery of nursing care based upon current nursing standards and practices, in accord with the Division of Nursing Policies and Procedures.
- Makes rounds on patients, keeping abreast of patient condition/changes.
- Communicates and follows up with other departments on unit/patients needs.
- In cases of internal or external disaster, directs unit activities.
- Reports significant clinical events to Nursing Supervisor or Nurse Manager.
- Is a participating member of the Nursing DIG Committee to identify opportunities for improving patient through-put.
- Enhances own professional growth and development.
- Reads, discusses and evaluates current research for possible implementation and collaborates in conducting nursing research.
- Assists with orientation of new employees. Provides feedback to them and the Unit Manager.
- Participates with the staff evaluation process. Provides information to the department nurse manager or director for the administration of annual performance evaluations including peer review, goal-setting, performance improvement and/or progressive discipline.
- Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
PATIENT CARE/AGE SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS
Possesses a knowledge specific to the patient population on this unit.
QUALIFICATIONS/BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Graduate of an approved school of nursing, with a Bachelor of Nursing required or currently enrolled in BSN or MSN program.
- Clinical nursing skills, effective communication, teaching and motivational skills.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION
Current license as a Registered Nurse in Illinois. Certification in area of expertise preferred.
CPR from American Heart Association
MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
- Provides some supervision and evaluation of clinical skills of nursing staff.
- Committee membership and participation.
- Demonstrates good interpersonal communication skills and professional behavior.
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONTACTS
- Frequent contact with physicians, patients, patients' families, visitors, and hospital staff.
- Contact with representatives of equipment and pharmaceutical companies.
ACCESS TO PROTECTED HEALTH INFORMATION
Computer system access for the Nursing Division is assigned based on criteria as specified in Policy # 08-113-0, and on the minimum necessary as described in this job description. Approval for level of access is given by the system administrator (for Nursing Division this is Nursing Informatics) or the department that has ownership of system/module. See computer system Access Control policy. The Assistant Manager of a Nursing Unit has Access Level H which includes Name, Demographic, Financial and Clinical. Meditech access for this job description is the same as NUR.NM See Policy 08-113-0, Attachment A.
