The Assistant Head Lifeguard position is responsible for the day-to-day safety of all swimming patrons. The Assistant assumes the role of the Head Lifeguard when the Head Lifeguard is not present. This position is under the general supervision of the Head Lifeguard.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide direct supervision of lifeguards when the Head Lifeguard is not present.
- Prepare daily beach inspections and daily activity logs.
- Assign and schedule lifeguards for specific duties and daily tasks when the Head Lifeguard is not present. Effectively communicate job expectations and Park District directives, and ensure completion of assigned duties and tasks.
- Maintain open communication with the Head Lifeguard regarding facility and guard operations. Work collaboratively with the Head Lifeguard to evaluate and continually improve processes and procedures.
- Assist the Head Lifeguard with fostering a team environment among lifeguards, and between lifeguards and other Centennial Beach staff.
- Assist the Head Lifeguard with pre-season training and weekly in-service training.
- Monitor supply and equipment inventories and report needs to Head Lifeguard.
- Ensure public safety by monitoring all depths of Centennial Beach and the surrounding Riverwalk areas within the direct vicinity of Centennial Beach.
- Prevent accidents by managing guests, enforcing rules, scanning swimmers for distress and directing weak swimmers to remain in shallow water.
- Provide rescue and emergency first aid care when needed.
- Manage aquatic emergencies and communicate to entire beach staff.
- Perform general maintenance and janitorial duties to maintain a safe, clean and friendly environment for guests, co-workers and the general public.
- Maintain proper care of safety equipment (e.g., Scuba, AED, oxygen tanks).
- Exercise mature judgment in administering rule enforcement for those who violate Beach safety rules.
- Refer with Head Guards and Beach Manager in cases of disciplinary actions for patrons.
- Participate in safety beach dives before opening and after facility is closed each day.
- Maintain a proactive approach to safety and risk management. Assist with annual loss control review process, aquatic audits and required health department inspections.
- Perform general chemical testing and chemical system monitoring on a daily basis.
- Demonstrate and support park district customer service standards.
- Follow district and departmental safety, personnel, and administrative policies, procedures and ordinances.
- Respond to customer inquiries and comments in a timely fashion.
- Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills (i.e., professional ability to attend to customer needs).
- Ability to address complaints and resolve concerns as needed.
- Mental and physical ability to respond quickly to any emergency.
- Demonstrate attention to detail.
- Exhibit a keen awareness of surroundings.
- Minimum two (2) years guarding experience at Centennial Beach or comparable aquatic facility.
- Full Facility Lifeguard status required.
- Ellis Lifeguarding certification required.
- CPR and First Aid certification required.
- Scuba certification required.
Special Considerations:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions.
- Ability to lift light to medium weight (20-50 lbs.) objects.
- Demonstrate 20/30 vision or the ability to achieve 20/30 vision through the use of corrective lenses.
