Job Description

CNO Financial Group’s Legal Department is hiring an Assistant General Counsel to autonomously provide a full range of legal advice and services in one or more specialized practice areas – including, but not limited to product development, marketing/sales, claims/underwriting/PHS, labor & employment, agent conduct, privacy, intellectual property, product management, information technology, and/or litigation management - across a major insurance segment of the enterprise.

This is your opportunity to lead and direct the legal or compliance review of respective enterprise-wide area (product development, sales/marketing, product management) for a major insurance segment.

As an Assistant General Counsel, your responsibilities will include:

  • Provides legal counsel, compliance guidance and interprets complex federal and state laws to support new insurance product development, new insurance product advertising, insurance product management, sales and marketing, and electronic transactions.
  • Collaborates with other legal associates, corporate and business units, including CNO’s broker dealer and retail registered investment advisor to identify and address regulatory risk in operational functions.
  • Works proactively with business partners in groups such as Actuarial, Marketing, Operations, Tax, etc. to identify legal issues and manage risk within their specialized area(s) of legal practice.
  • Advises, collaborates and coordinates with leaders in business segments and enterprise functions (i.e., actuarial, marketing, operations, tax, etc.) on matters relating to legal and compliance risks pertaining respective area.
  • Monitors and evaluates insurance industry and regulatory developments, surveys the potential impact to corporate policies, and recommends appropriate response to changes in the regulatory or industry environment.
  • Responsible for developing and executing short term operational plans that support the execution of higher-level compliance and legal strategies.
  • Frequently manages external counsel on outsourced legal initiatives and represents the Company on mediations, including those of relatively high risk and exposure.
  • Reviews and negotiates mid-level to complex insurance and annuity related contracts as determined by total spend and the risk of breach.

The Assistant General Counsel position is well-suited for you if you:

  • Have an in-depth knowledge of legal/compliance principles in the life and health insurance and investment advisory industries and how it relates to the enterprise-wide operations.
  • Demonstrated experience in insurance policy form drafting (e.g., life, annuity, supplemental health) and other contract drafting and other writing skills within an insurance or investment advisory firm.
  • Proven ability to manage internal resources, as well as outside counsel and other contracted resources, to provide high quality and timely services and guidance within established product development schedules.
  • Proven experience identifying, developing, and implementing plans to mitigate insurance industry compliance risk
  • Identify and communicate to all areas of the organization key legal and compliance risks under federal and state laws pertaining to the design, marketing and administration of insurance products. to include solution to potential risks, thinking creatively and partnering with the business to evolve solutions.
  • Exhibit strong communication skills, both written and oral, to inform on highly technical specialized matters.

Qualified candidates will have:

  • Juris Doctorate required; licensed to practice law in at least one jurisdiction.
  • At least 7 years of legal career experience, including at least 3 years in the insurance industry.
  • Previous experience reviewing and negotiating mid-level to complex insurance and annuity related contracts
  • Life and health insurance industry experience strongly preferred

CNO Financial Group offices reopened in April 2022 and we will be pursuing a hybrid working model. Associates who live within a 60 mile radius of a corporate office (Birmingham, Carmel, Chicago, Philadelphia, Orlando and Milwaukee) will have access to come into that Office up to 2 days/week, and work from home at least 3 days/week. This role is full time work from home (WFH), also known as Remote. This role can be performed from any US based location within the central or eastern time zone. Work cannot be performed from outside of the United States.
