Job Description

Title: Assistant Director of Security

Program: Shelters- Fort Washington Men’s Shelter, New Providence Women’s Shelter, Kenton Hall Men’s Shelter,3rd Street Men’s Shelter, Ana’s Place, East Williamsburg Men’s Shelter, and Marsha’s House


Overall Responsibilities:

The position will report to the Director of Security and will focus on crisis intervention and training of all staff (contracted security and PRI staff) in crisis management and verbal de-escalation. The position will require the Assistant Director of Security to work closely with shelter leadership and security managers. Applicant must be able to work a varied schedule that includes nights and weekends. While the position will be based at our Fort Washington Men’s Shelter, it will require regular travel to our six other DHS-funded shelters.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The essential duties of the Assistant Director include but are not limited to the following activities:

  • Act as a liaison between PRI staff and contracted security and agencies who conduct business with PRI such as FDNY, NYPD, EMS and NYP staff;
  • Facilitate trainings for all incoming staff and provide ongoing trainings and support to current staff;
  • Conduct all post-incident reviews and compose detailed incident reports, including the completion of the Safety and Security Checklist;
  • Lead post incident debriefing exercises with staff and contracted security;
  • Think critically around security measures, including the identification of weaknesses/breaches such as poorly illuminated hallways, compromised door locks, compromised windows/window guards, alleyway doors etc.;
  • Ensure proper maintenance and have a working knowledge of access equipment, including the walkthrough magnetometer, X-ray machine, scanning wand and internal panic button systems;
  • Attend CAB Meetings and Build-a-Block Meetings as necessary; and
  • Participate in internal trainings and staff meetings as assigned.


Candidate Requirements:

  • A minimum of 5 years in the human service and/or security field. A minimum of 2 years supervisory experience
  • Experience working with adults with mental health and/or substance use issues, preferably in homeless shelters or supportive housing
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • F-80 Certification
  • Bilingual or multilingual a plus
