The starting salary placement depends on qualifications and experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $3,886.00/month to $5,709.00/month.

About the Position

Working independently and with support of the Head Athletic Trainer in the development, administration, and coordination of medical care of intercollegiate athletes. Assist with daily operation of athletic training facility and equipment, including providing medical coverage for intercollegiate sport practices and contests. Perform injury evaluations, provide treatments for injuries, proactive injury prevention, and oversee rehabilitation and conditioning programs. Assist Head Athletic trainer with the creation and management of schedules and assignments. Share oversight of programming and contribute to the creation and oversight of policies and procedures for Sports Medicine. Maintain a professional work environment with student-athletes, staff, and campus community. Organization and operation of the sports medicine program in the absence of a head athletic trainer. Ability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays and be available to travel with teams. Maintain necessary athletic training certifications.

Responsibilities

Athletic training duties:

• Daily operation of athletic training facility and equipment, including providing medical coverage for intercollegiate sport practices and games.
• Perform injury evaluations, provide treatments for injuries, proactive injury prevention and oversee rehabilitation and conditioning programs independently and in consult with the head athletic trainer.
• Communicate with coaches regarding status of injured athletes.
• Serve as first responder for assigned sport supervision and home events.

Administrative duties:

• Assist the Head Athletic Trainer with the development, administration, and coordination of medical care of intercollegiate athlete medical care including the scheduling and assigning of student athletes for outside referrals, treatment, and rehabilitation/therapy.
• Assist the Head Athletic Trainer with sport assignment and coverage schedules.
• Assist with supervision of student trainers and interns.
• Documenting injuries, complete injury reports, maintain medical records/files.
• Assist with collection, organization, and maintenance of confidential medical and insurance records and insurance billing.
• Assist in the coordination of other athletic trainers and provide direction and training to Athletic trainer I’s or interns, student trainers.
• Assist in the coordination of pre-participation physicals and drug prevention and drug testing requirements.
• Assist in developing and monitoring the athletic training program budget.
• Organization and operation of the sports medicine program in the absence of a head athletic trainer.

Required Qualifications

Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of the principles and practices of athletic training including injury prevention, injury assessment and rehabilitation; the full range of therapeutic modalities and their practical use and physiological basis; other therapeutic preventions and treatments such as taping and bracing; determine the appropriate referrals for athletes to other health care professionals; effective use of rehabilitation and exercise equipment; rules regulations and guidelines established by the NCAA, CCAA, and CSUEB, pertaining to student athletes; Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standards for handling Blood Borne Pathogens; maintain medical records, including Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards; and following insurance standards.

Ability to professionally and effectively assess and evaluate injuries and their severity; develop conditioning and rehabilitation programs to manage and treat injuries; recognize life threatening situations and administer the appropriate emergency aid; use a computer to accurately perform medical, insurance and other recordkeeping functions; train others on new skills and procedures; communicate clearly, concisely and effectively, both orally and in writing. Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills to develop effective working relationships with athletes and serve as a liaison among athletes, coaching staff, parents, physicians and other health professionals.

Ability to work on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and travel as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge:

Comprehensive knowledge of the Athletic Trainer I.

Abilities:

Ability to demonstrate full-to-advanced proficiency in the skills and abilities of the Athletic Trainer I; demonstrate the leadership, organizational, and administrative skills involved in coordinating an athletic training and sports medicine program.

Experience:

Equivalent to two years of experience as a certified Athletic Trainer in a high school or college environment.

Education:

Equivalent to bachelor’s degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology or related field of study or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.

License and Certifications:

Possess and maintain Board of Certification (BOC) certification for Athletic Trainer. Some positions may require a valid California driver’s license.
