Position description

The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine in the Department of Medicine (http://med.ucsd.edu/) at University of California, San Diego is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and is actively seeking candidates with a strong commitment to teaching, and program development for the position of Research Scientist in Lung Biology.

The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine is seeking an experienced research scientist to hold a leadership role in the laboratory of Dr. Zea Borok. The Borok laboratory has made major contributions to the understanding of the biology of alveolar epithelial cells and the roles these cells play in maintaining normal alveolar homeostasis as well as in the development of acute and chronic lung injury and fibrosis.

The successful candidate will function independently and have oversight responsibility for their research program. The research will be broadly aimed at elucidating the function of normal alveolar epithelium and the role of alveolar epithelial injury in acute and chronic lung disease. On behalf of the PI, the Research Scientist will direct the work of a midsized lab, offer significant innovative contributions to project design, support the mentorship and training of postdoctoral fellows, problem solve, analyze and integrate data, and write up and present results. The successful candidate will also write proposals for funding of both their own projects and in collaboration with the PI.

Candidates must have a PhD in health science and must have a minimum of four years experience as a Postdoctoral Scholar. Candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills.

Demonstrated experience in the field of pulmonary research with a breadth of experience in human and animal samples/models, and molecular, physiological and cell culture techniques preferred. Preferred candidate will have flexibility to accommodate experiments and grant deadlines and will be willing to learn and develop new skills. Bioinformatics expertise is a plus.

Appointment will be at Assistant, Associate or Full Research Scientist level based on background and years of experience.
