Join our team of Work Equipment Mechanic! These employees maintain and repair tools, equipment, and machines for our engineering department. You’ll work with several types of equipment to help ensure Union Pacific can continue to safely and efficiently transport goods to customers across North America! Required Certifications:
For this position, you will be required to become a Union Pacific certified driver during your probationary period. To become certified, you must meet the following Motor Vehicle and Medical Requirements:
1. Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
2. Have valid driver's license
3. Have an acceptable driving record per your Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)
4. You may also be required to obtain your Commercial Driver's License (CDL) if you will be operating a vehicle(s) with a GVWR of 26,000 lbs or greater. If this is required, you will need to obtain your CDL during your probationary period.
Medical Requirements:Must meet the medical requirements (also called physical qualifications) for commercial motor vehicle drivers as specified by the US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The FMCSA physical qualifications for drivers can be found on the FMCSA homepage. Health and Medical Services at Union Pacific Railroad will make the final determination on whether or not an individual meets the FMCSA medical qualifications, and may add additional medical requirements to assure the person can safely perform job tasks, with or without accommodation.
Accountabilities
- Work with and inspect tools, roadway machines, vehicles, and equipment.
- Perform maintenance and repair; troubleshoot malfunctions
- Plan, organize, and track information; coordinate the work of others
- Coordinate with others orally or in writing; work with information in print or on a computer
- Understand and follow company and industry safety rules, practices, and procedures
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors and/or customers and effectively handle controversy
- Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required- Computer literate and have basic keyboarding computer skills
- Valid driver's license
- Able to understand and apply safety rules, practice safe work habits, identify safety risks and avoid potentially risky behaviors and situations
- Experience with large motor generators, high-voltage circuitry, electronics and/or electro-mechanical systems.
- Must have the following: 4 years of verifiable experience as a diesel mechanic or gas automotive/heavy equipment mechanic OR must possess a Journeyman's Mechanic's card
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to deliver information to coworker(s) and supervisor(s)
- Able to perform basic arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and conversion of fractions into decimals and decimals into fractions to solve practical problems. In addition, applicants must be able to extract relevant information from tables, charts, graphs, and text
- Able to use both high precision (for example, calipers, electronic scales) and low precision (for example, tape measures, hand levels) instruments to get accurate measurements
- Able to provide own set of mechanics' tools if hired
- Able to read and understand schematic drawings of electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems

Preferred- An Associate's degree in electronics, control systems, AC/DC motors, mechanics, diesel technology or electrical components (or a higher level degree)
- Experience working in an environment that requires you to wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection
- Experience working with, on, and around moving heavy equipment (Consider professional, personal, and volunteer experience)
- Experience working outdoors in variable weather conditions (consider professional, personal, and volunteer experience)
- Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class A or Class B, or can obtain one within your probationary period
Physical Requirements
- Able to frequently walk and maintain balance on a variety of surfaces and must have manual dexterity with eye-hand coordination
- Must have normal color vision and be able to detect and interpret different visual color signals and displays, and identify and determine the speed of moving objects at near or far distances
- Able to remain standing or sitting for more than one-half of every work day with an opportunity to periodically change position for comfort
- Able to lift/carry and push/pull objects weighing between 50 lbs. and 150 lbs; ability to perform physically strenuous work on a continuous basis and occasionally bend, stoop and kneel
Work Conditions
- Successful completion of a formal training program in electronics, control systems, AC/DC motors, or electrical components
- Willing to work various shifts, overtime, holidays, and weekends
- Willing to work in confined and/or small spaces
- Agree to wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection where the company requires
- Authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship
- 21 years of age or older
- Work at heights of 20 feet or more
- Must be willing and able to work around large equipment such as railcars, locomotives and cranes
- Travel Requirements: Away from home for several days or weeks at a time, with travel constituting 95-100% of the position
