Web Manager

The Department of Medicine (DOM) is looking for a creative Web Manager who will further the Department’s mission by supporting our evolving portfolio of 65 websites. Reporting directly to the DOM Director of Communications, the Web Manager works closely with a wide range of stakeholders and units to achieve DOM goals within the existing framework of UCSF websites, and must be able to integrate and present information in a clear, efficient, and user-friendly manner. The Web Manager will be responsible for developing websites, providing content management, content strategy, and project management.
The Web Manager will use his or her skills as a seasoned, experienced communications professional to produce design and layout for a variety of non-routine and moderately complex website applications; ensure search engine optimization; and develop website content strategy for center, lab, and divisional websites.
The Web Manager is responsible for website maintenance, and updating internal and external pages to reflect current departmental and divisional activities and programs related to the DOM’s research, clinical, educational, and public service missions. The individual will also work on a monthly departmental electronic newsletter under the direction of the DOM Director of Communications and Associate Chair for Administration. Additionally, the individual will work on DOM portals and other web-based applications to support DOM initiatives.
The Web Manager is able to manage multiple projects with conflicting deadlines concurrently. This position requires a high degree of self-motivation and excellence in both verbal and written communication.
Candidates will be asked to provide examples of their work.
Work location: remote until June 30, 2021; mainly Parnassus, but needs to commute to all DOM sites as needed.
Department Description
The Department of Medicine (DOM) is the largest department in the School of Medicine (SOM) at UCSF. The mission of the Department includes research, teaching, patient care, and public service. The DOM has an annual budget of ~$500M across three sites with ~3,000 employees. The DOM comprises 24% of all UCSF faculty, 29% of the SOM’s faculty, and 19% of the SOM budget. For the past 30 years, the DOM has consistently ranked among the top four departments of medicine in the country, and in the last several years, the department has been the number one recipient of National Institutes of Health (NIH) research dollars. The DOM has 17 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and 15 non-ACGME fellowship programs, and its internal medicine residency has consistently been ranked as one of the top programs in the country. Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in website content strategy/writing/communications or related area and at least 4 years of related communications experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Thorough knowledge of Front-end Development programming languages
- Thorough knowledge of content management systems and/or relevant web applications used for web production and organization-specific computer application programs (e.g. Drupal, WordPress)
- Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of web design and user experience, including skill to design in an appealing, lively and relevant way
- Thorough knowledge of software programs (e.g. MailChimp, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.)
- Thorough skill in creating effective web sites
- Thorough knowledge of a variety of programming languages (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and jQuery)
- Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, editorial style, and punctuation, including skill to write in a clinical setting
- Thorough understanding of technical language and requirements of the assigned work
- Thorough skills to create clear, easy-to-navigate, informative, accurate, well-designed, and functional web sites that provide web content consistent with the organization's message and in keeping with management directives and client objectives
- Thorough technical skills in computer applications for web production, image handling, publishing and design, illustration, presentation preparation, animation, web interaction, and/or other state-of-the-art web communication capabilities
- Experience using APIs to utilize commercial and open-source software
- Thorough interpersonal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams with other professionals such as back-end developers and project managers
- Thorough understanding of institutional processes, procedures, and applicable rules and regulations for web communications, including web accessibility standards
- Thorough knowledge of code versioning tools such as Git
