The Town of Culpeper’s Environmental Services Department is seeking qualified applicants for a Utility Plant Operator. An experienced operator with a water treatment license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia is preferred; however, persons without experience or license will be considered. The successful candidate will perform technical work operating, monitoring, and adjusting the process of a water and/or wastewater treatment plant; operate well stations and tanks; inspect well sites; collect samples for testing; mix and change chemicals; assist in various plant maintenance operations; and perform other duties as assigned. This position is part of a career ladder with specific duties varying at each level. This position is required to work 12 hour shifts. Salary is based on career ladder placement, qualifications, and experience: Utility Operator Trainee (no license) - $16.28/hour Utility Operator Trainee (Class IV license) - $20.00/hour Utility Plant Operator I (Class III license) - $22.00/hour Utility Plant Operator II (Class II license) - $25.80/hour Senior Utility Plant Operator (Class I license) - $28.40/hour Minimum Qualifications: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and ability to operate a personal computer. Preferred Qualifications: Experience operating a water and/or wastewater treatment plant facility. Knowledge of treatment plant principles and operating practices; knowledge of operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of a treatment plant; knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work; ability to detect flaws in the operation of equipment and determine proper remedial measures; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
