VP, Consolidation and SEC Reporting Details

Assurant has an exciting opportunity for a VP of Consolidation and SEC Reporting!

This is a senior position within the Global Accounting Department and will provide leadership around Assurant’s external reporting function. The successful candidate will lead the production of Assurant’s consolidated U.S. GAAP financial statements filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the financial supplement posted on Assurant’s website as well as the financials and schedules included in the earnings press release. Additionally, this position will keep abreast of emerging SEC guidance and new and proposed U.S. GAAP accounting standards to ascertain the potential disclosure implications to Assurant’s financial statements.

This position reports to the VP – Assistant Controller and is responsible for leading a staff of 17+ professionals, with 2 direct reports (located in the northeast and mid-west). There is significant interaction with Segment Controllers and functional areas (e.g. investments, actuarial, tax, legal, and investor relations). The position will collaborate with business unit and functional teams for the end to end process in producing the consolidated financial statements and related disclosures as required by U.S. GAAP and the SEC. The successful candidate will have a high degree of interpersonal communications and be able to interact at the senior levels within the finance organization.

This individual will work remotely temporarily due to COVID-19.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

Consolidation Responsibilities (40%):

  • Responsible for oversight of planning, coordinating and managing the production of the consolidated US GAAP Financial Statements (balance sheet, income statement, statement of comprehensive income, statement of changes in stockholders’ equity and statement of cash flows).

  • Liaise with segment accounting teams and segment FP&A to prepare/review complete, accurate and timely analytics for the consolidated balance sheet, income statement and statement of cash flows.

  • Distribute enterprise financial information to Senior Management and other key stakeholders.

  • Review and approve all non-GAAP measures of performance and ensure that the reconciliation to the most appropriate GAAP metric is complete and accurate.

SEC Reporting Responsibilities (40%):

  • Review and approve all SEC reporting (cover-to-cover 10-Q/K, 8-Ks, shelf registrations).

  • Work with Accounting Policy to ensure all that all new and adopted accounting standards are appropriately disclosed in the footnotes to the financial statements.

  • Work with Segment Controllers and Segment Accounting teams to ensure that all acquisitions and dispositions, new business transactions and or significant changes in operations are appropriately disclosed.

  • Assist the Director of SEC reporting with the preparation of the MD&A in collaboration with different stakeholders (Segment Controllers and Segment FP&A).

  • Ensure all review comments and or questions raised by key internal stakeholders (CAO, CFO, legal, investor relations, FP&A and external auditors) are appropriately addressed.

  • Review and approve all other quarterly external reporting deliverables (earnings press release, CEO/CFO call scripts and the financial supplement).

Other Responsibilities (20%):

  • Responsible for the preparation and adherence to the quarterly and annual global finance close calendar and monitor adherence to the calendar.

  • Oversee the Corporate Segment Accounting Function and work with Segment FP&A to present quarterly results to Senior Management.

  • Review and approve all stand-alone legal entity financial statements prepared in accordance with US GAAP.

  • Oversee the financial reporting controls over the Consolidation and SEC Reporting groups.

  • 17 total employees broken out by group as follows: 4 employees in SEC Reporting, and 13 employees in Consolidation and Corporate Segment Accounting.

Responsibility for managing project resources

  • May require managing external consultants for ad hoc projects

Basic Qualifications Required - Experience, Skills and Knowledge:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required

  • CPA or equivalent certification required

  • Prior SEC reporting experience required

  • Minimum of 15 years prior financial accounting and management experience required

  • Excellent team player

  • Big 4 public accounting experience preferred

  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP

  • Knowledge of Sarbanes Oxley rules and regulations

  • Knowledge of XBRL tagging a plus

  • Strong planning, organizational and analytical skills

  • Experience in handling and effectively prioritizing multiple concurrent tasks and meeting strict deadlines

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports and legal documents and assess their impact

  • Ability to respond effectively to requests from business partners and senior management

  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with all levels within the organization

  • Attention to detail

  • 10% Travel

Preferred Experience, Skills and Knowledge:

  • Financial Services industry experience is a plus

  • M&A Experience

  • Ability to influence without direct authority
