POSITION SUMMARY:
The VP/Nursing Clinical Quality and Informatics, CNIO is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, leading, and evaluating enterprise level nursing programs that include, but are not limited to quality, documentation management, nursing regulatory readiness, magnet standards, and clinical data systems.
As Chief Nursing Information Officer (CNIO), this individual mentors entity-based CNIOs/Directors of Clinical Informatics and works collaboratively with IT Directors of Clinical Information Systems. This individual provides leadership and strategic direction in the integration and harmonization of clinical practice with clinical information and telecommunication systems to improve patient care across the Johns Hopkins Health System.
The VP/CNIO participates as an active member of the IT @ Hopkins Strategic Management and the Nursing and Patient Care Services executive teams, and works collaboratively with the CMIO and other interdisciplinary leaders to establish short and long term goals and implementation strategies that support the JHM strategic plan and priorities.
The VP/CNIO is accountable for strategic and operational nursing leadership in the selection, development, deployment, reengineering, optimization, and integration of clinical and management information systems to support clinicians and patient service. The VP/CNIO is responsible for leading clinical policy and workflow harmonization efforts to maximize patient safety, quality of care, and operational efficiency; providing direction for training and support optimization and overseeing ongoing role development of entity-based super users.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
This system-level position reports to the Senior Vice President for Nursing, Johns Hopkins Health System. CNIO Supervises program managers and staff.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
- Earned Doctorate in nursing or related field.
- Master's degree in nursing, nursing informatics, or information management from an accredited school of nursing.
- Ten years advanced leadership experience in successfully managing complex hospital and patient care delivery
- Five years working with information technology and systems development, implementation, and support.
- In-depth knowledge of nursing theory; practice; administration; the science of safety; information sciences and information sciences research methodologies; Information and data management systems and associated software applications and configurations.
- Knowledge and mastery of information systems to support operational and clinical activities.
- Experienced with the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program
- Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Maryland
- Certification in nursing informatics or related field
- Analytical ability necessary to oversee, direct, and evaluate objectives and operations of nursing department; develop and administer sound policies, procedures, budgets, and standards; identify and respond to deficiencies; and initiate corrective actions to achieve desired results.
- Mastery of skills required to direct the build and management of data systems and the ability to analyze complex data sets to address clinical, operational, and personnel management issues.

- Establishes timely and effective communication with leadership within and outside of Johns Hopkins Nursing to inform them of important issues and trends
- Develops strategies and tactics to facilitate JHM goals for clinical transformation.

LEADERSHIP AND ACCOUNTABILITY
- Collaborates with Vice Presidents for Nursing, other senior directors of nursing, and the Vice President for Information Systems in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Johns Hopkins Nursing and Information Technology strategic plans, objectives, and standards.
- Provides strategic and tactical direction for the Nursing Quality, Clinical Informatics, and Magnet programs
- Leads the development and implementation of a vision and strategic plan of how technology in the broadest sense can support the highest standards of patient care through professional nursing practice.
- Leverages available JHM resources, such as the Armstrong Institute, to develop, implement, and evaluate programs to strengthen inter-professional clinical quality and the quality and safety of clinical information systems.
- Develops key partnerships to realize the value of clinical informatics to the enterprise

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
- Builds capacity for strong quality and safety management that leverages the skills and expertise of bedside nurses
- Builds capacity for strong informatics support that leverages the skills and expertise project team members and clinical informatics specialists
- Builds capacity for strong informatics support at the system and microsystem level, leveraging the skills and expertise of super-users.
- Modernize information system training techniques to facilitate optimal integration of technology into clinical practice
