We are a community based hospice with local staff serving the local community in South Carolina and named a four time winner of "Best Place to Work in Healthcare!"Responsibilities:The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for recruiting, coordinating, training, selecting, supervising and retaining volunteer services committed to the philosophy, goals and objectives of the hospice concept. This is accomplished by recruitment efforts in the community, scheduling and facilitating training, assigning volunteers to specific patients and/or facilities representing volunteers regularly with the Interdisciplinary Team, monitoring patient records and mentoring the volunteers through phone contact and ongoing training opportunities.

  • Interfaces with the Director of Hospice to aid in the overall development and enhancement of the volunteer program and in developing and conducting a continuing program for recruiting, training, andretention of volunteers.
  • Assures a sufficient number of volunteers to consistently provide service time equal to no less than 5% of direct care hours.
  • Supervises and establishes goals and objectives with and for the volunteer program. Monitors progress towards objectives/goals and follows up with supervisor.
  • Responsible for screening, selecting, evaluating, counseling or disciplinary actions of volunteers, to ensure these individuals meet the highest standards of personal integrity, emotional maturity, responsibility, flexibility and sensitivity needs of the dying patient and family.
  • Assigns volunteers to meet program needs appropriate to volunteers’ interests and skills, including appropriate record keeping.
  • Coordinates and conducts volunteer training and orientation sessions.
  • Interfaces with the Regional Director regarding revisions, additions and deletions of volunteer forms.
  • Responsible for documenting and tracking appropriate volunteer statistical information and other volunteer program records as evidenced by evaluations and other volunteer demographic needs completed before expiration or due date.
  • Assesses and identifies volunteers’ educational needs and implements appropriate programs.
  • Responsible for planning the annual recognition program for volunteers.
  • Manages time in a cost-effective manner that demonstrates an understanding of hospice reimbursement methodologies.
  • Tracks and records volunteer hours and comprise a current and accurate volunteer cost-savings report.
  • Completes a written performance evaluation of each volunteer in a timely manner on an annual basis.
  • Establishes a minimum of two distinct volunteer positions: direct care, clerical support.
  • Assures volunteer recruiting is sufficient and meets set goals per agency strategic plan.
  • Anticipates and plans for day to day problems.
  • Develops solutions to staff, material or time shortages.
  • Schedules work to achieve smooth, orderly work flow.
  • Satisfies expectations and requirements of external customers.
  • Responds to suggestion constructively.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with clergy, individuals and organizations within the community necessary to support the outreach activities of the volunteer program.
  • Assists with ongoing internal and external community relations program to maintain ties with potential volunteers and organizations.
  • Works in conjunction with the Regional Director or other appropriate team members to coordinate community awareness campaigns and activities.
  • Attends and participates in scheduled team meetings as a team member to facilitate clinical staff understanding of the utilization of volunteer services. May attend IDT meetings.
  • Reviews and implements policies and procedures to assure the volunteer department remains in compliance with the COP’s.
  • Demonstrates ongoing review of thoroughness and accuracy of volunteer documentation.
  • Provides an environment which promotes respect for patient, privacy, and property.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the patient’s rights and responsibilities.
  • Provides necessary skills to appropriately report changes and document pertinent information and care rendered to the patient to ensure continuity of care.
  • Significant changes in the condition or environment of a patient are noted and reported to the supervisor in accordance with agency policy.
  • Recognizes and reports necessary revisions to the volunteer plan of care within 24 hours.
  • Documents services provided and pertinent findings during each visit. Seeks clarification of duties when indicated.
  • Ensures signature includes first name, last name and credentials and is clearly legible on all notes.
  • Practices accepted infection control principles.
  • Follows all infection control guidelines and standards per agency policy.
  • Demonstrates commitment, professional growth and competency.
  • Attends all meeting s & in-services as assigned.
  • Attends training, education, seminars, or other means of learning as permitted by supervisor.
  • Written and verbal communication is expressed clearly and in a cooperative manner.
  • Participates on committees and task forces as requested.
  • Promotes the Agency philosophy, mission statement and administrative policies to ensure quality of care.
  • Maintains patient & staff privacy and confidentiality at all times pursuant to the HIPAA Privacy Final Rule.
  • Provides positive, supportive communication to physicians, patients, families, facilities, visitors, and other agency personnel.
  • Maintains availability by phone as directed by company policy.
  • Promotes Agency image by adhering to the dress code.
  • Reports to work, facilities, patient homes promptly as scheduled.
  • Meets minimum productivity requirements based on agency standard.
  • Carries out the mission and values of Hospice.
  • Abides by company policy and procedures as outlined by company policy manual.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications/Requirements:EDUCATION: High School Graduate or GED equivalent. LICENSURE:Not applicable EXPERIENCE: 2 years experience in a health care or hospice setting. SKILLS: Ability to plan, organize and supervise volunteers. Excellent communication both verbally and written. Ability to motivate, interact with and recruit adiverse range of individuals in the business and community. Able to demonstrate problem-solving skills, organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to handle multiple priorities, documentation requirements and deadlines. Experience in mentoring staff. Skilled in conflict resolution. Able to adapt personal style/approach to gain cooperation without confrontation. TRANSPORTATION:Reliable transportation. HEALTH STATUS: Meets all applicable agency policies and procedures related to health screening and required testing.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:1. Complete required work on a daily basis. 2. Cope with work involving ill, disabled, and dying patients. 3. Sit, stand, bend, lift, and move intermittently. Must be able to lift at least 25lbs and bear the weight of an average adult effectively so as to be able to perform the above listed functions. 4. Move equipment and supplies necessary for job functions. 5. Read in a 12 point or larger type, speak and write English in order to fulfill job functions in an understandable way. 6. See/hear or use prosthetics that enable accomplishment of job. 7. Meet the health requirements of the agency. 8. Possible exposure to infectious diseases. 9. Abide by all occupational safety and bloodborne pathogen protocol to minimize illness and/or injury. 10. Move, support and/or transfer patients as required to perform essential functions of position.
