Vice President of Human Resources

The Vice President of Human Resources manages, directs, and coordinates departmental activities and programs for the Toledo Zoo’s Human Resources Department which encompasses HR, Safety and Volunteers. Oversees direction of organizational development, policies and programs covering employment, compensation, benefits, performance management, recruiting and retention, labor relations, terminations, and compliance with all applicable federal, state and local laws.

Vice President of Human Resources duties include:

  • Works with the CEO/President to define the human resources goals and objectives.
  • Plan, develop, organize, implement, direct and evaluate the organization’s human resource function and performance.
  • Acting liaison with various insurance carriers and fosters effective relationships with client representatives.
  • Develop progressive and proactive compensation and benefits programs.
  • Continue to improve the programs, policies, practices and processes associated with meeting the strategic and operational people issues of the organization.
  • Develop and oversee coordination of effective recruitment programs. Work with recruiting staff to develop strategy for recruiting top caliber employees.
  • Act as senior level advisor on human resources issues to other executives and all level of employees throughout the organization.
  • Plan and recommend budgets, manages expenditures, and reports on budget variances.
  • Create vision for training programs which will help to continually improve productivity of consulting groups and other departments throughout the organization.
  • Coordinate and execute labor relations in regards to union contract negotiations and policies.

Minimum Training and Experience

Bachelor degree in Human Resources or related field, ten years experience in the HR arena with an organization that has 300 employees or more. Experience in public or private personnel management, or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. PHR or SPHR preferred. Reports to the President/CEO and is a member of the Senior Management Group involved with strategy development, tactical management planning and goal-setting. This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and requires time worked in excess of forty hours per week.
