What you will accomplish:Strategic Concepts for the Position
The Vice President of Business Development Resources (BDR) – Power and Energy, is primarily responsible for advancing client relationships, business development strategy, geographic growth, and staff development for SWCA in the Power and Energy markets. The Vice President of BDR – Power and Energy will report directly to the Senior VP of BDR, and will contribute to SWCA on a companywide level by growing and diversifying into new markets, clientele, and geographies, as well as expanding and developing staff technical and consulting capabilities. Managing client relationships includes being a client manager for key clients; supervising, mentoring, or collaborating with BDR and operations staff who lead client accounts; contributing significantly to sales with existing and/or emerging clients; and focusing on the generation (wind and solar), electric transmission, oil and gas, and mining business lines. The Vice President may also manage clients and/or projects across the industry and energy business lines and services lines (ecological restoration, planning, and permitting) as needed. Strategic concepts for this position include:
  • Lead Business Development Directors (Generation, Transmission, Oil and Gas, Mining) by building and nurturing an environment of performance and engagement.
  • Directly supervise the Power and Energy BDR team, plus work collaboratively with Operations staff who share business development and client management accountabilities.
  • Sustain and develop the BDR Directors by providing and tracking clear goals and priorities with the team.
  • Accelerate the development of the BDR Directors through coaching, mentorship, and skill-building.
  • Individual sales of $2 Million+/year.
  • 5% to 10% billable (involved and/or managing at least one project and/or client program).
  • Coordinate with SVP of BDR, Government and Infrastructure VP of BDR, VP of Marketing, Regional SVPs of Operations, and CEO on strategy for market, service, and geography growth.
  • Anticipate changes in the marketplace and identify opportunities for SWCA to expand services and offerings.
  • Manage and report on the performance of the function / business area; set appropriate performance objectives for direct reports and hold them accountable for achieving these; take appropriate corrective action where necessary to ensure the achievement of annual business objectives.
  • Manage opportunity-specific sales and pursuit teams; tasks include opportunity identification and evaluation, project development, and proposal and presentation preparation.
  • Annual planning and alignment of business lines and/or new services with overall SWCA growth goals.
  • Key Client audits – feedback on performance and improvement strategies
  • Assist SVP of BDR, Government and Infrastructure VP of BDR, and VP of Marketing with development and implementation of business development training program for SWCA and client management program.
  • Identify, lead, and support initiatives for enhanced business development performance and efficiencies for continued growth. This includes marketing and branding activities, pursuit tracking, and increased sales efficiencies.
  • Business development mentoring of existing SWCA staff, BDR staff, and BD/Client Services Leads and, Project Managers, and Staff.
  • Coordinate and work closely with Operations, SVPs, and the Technical VPs to combine specific BD efforts using the technical/science team.
  • Provide Proposal Coordination/Review:
    • ensure resources are allocated properly for proposals,
    • assist with Go/No-Go decisions,
    • work with the Marketing/Proposal Coordinators to ensure proper QA/QC of proposals.
  • Embody SWCA culture and values both externally and internally.
  • Facilitate attracting strategic staff to SWCA in support of major pursuits and strategic initiatives.
Experience and qualifications for success:REQUIRED
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of experience within the Power and Energy markets; includes experience with client development, proposal and interview writing and preparation, and bid preparation.
  • Project management expertise including experience with siting, routing, permitting and/or developing transmission, wind (offshore and onshore), and/or solar projects.
  • Understanding of environmental compliance during construction as well as operation and maintenance for power and energy projects (especially transmission/sub-transmission/distribution projects, wind/solar and pipeline and mining) in a variety of regulatory settings
  • Post-construction monitoring and compliance experience and understanding of power and energy projects
  • Industry contacts with regulated utilities, and regulatory agencies associated with at least one of the following industries: wind (off-shore and on-shore), solar and transmission, pipeline, and mining,
  • Strong understanding of power and energy markets, and a demonstrated ability to recognize and develop opportunities into successful sales and sustained growth
  • Availability to travel throughout the U.S.

PREFERRED
  • Ten (10) years of experience selling environmental and/or industry-related Power and Energy services. Proven track record of developing high-performing individuals, successfully leading teams to meet and exceed company goals.
  • Experience across the U.S. (West, Rockies, Central/East).
  • Strong familiarity working with the major federal environmental regulations (NEPA/ESA/CWA/NHPA, etc.) and state and local regulations (CPCN/CCNs, CUPs, etc.) as they relate to power and energy projects; familiarity working with major federal and state agencies who govern power and energy projects (BLM/BOEM/FERC/PUC’s, etc.).
  • Working knowledge about basic design elements of electric transmission, renewables, and pipeline systems and related facilities, as well as associated permitting and licensing requirements.
  • Industry contacts with at least one of the following markets: transmission, renewables, oil/gas/pipeline, and mining companies and merchants, and regulatory agencies associated with at least one of these industries.
