VECTOR CONTROL WORKER Details

This position is responsible for participating in the City's Integrated Pest Management Program, specifically as related to rodent and mosquito abatement throughout the city of Rocky Mount.

The Community Code Enforcement Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Prepares and distributes rodent bait-stations; monitors rodent activities; responds to citizen complaints, and maintains associated records.

  • Operates mosquito control equipment, such as vehicle-mounted and hand held low velocity fogging equipment, related automated monitoring equipment, and other associated software.

  • Identifies mosquito and rodent infestations by observing common habitats such as wooded areas, ditches, storm drains, and retention ponds.

  • Maintains pesticide storage area. Assists with abandoned vehicle, weed, and refuse abatement programs.

  • Performs routine maintenance and calibration of mosquito fogging equipment.

  • Performs routine maintenance of all field work tools and equipment.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.

  • No experience requirements.

  • Must participate in a North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Pesticide Safety Course and pass both the Core Exam and the Public Health Exam within 12 months of hire.

  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS

  • Knowledge of pesticide application regulations.

  • Knowledge of rodent infestation identification and abatement.

  • Knowledge of mosquito and rodent abatement techniques and theory.

  • Skill in the use of hand foggers, hand tools, and other job related equipment.

  • Skill in analyzing problems and identifying solutions.

  • Skill in preparing clear and accurate reports or records.

  • Skill in establishing cooperative and productive working relationships.

  • Skill in performing mathematical calculations.

  • Skill in interpersonal relations.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Community Code Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and recorded within state guidelines and regulations.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include pesticide labels; public health regulations; equipment operating instructions; and safety standards. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related vector control duties. Health hazards contribute to the complexity of the work. During the months of April to October, the Vector Control Worker may be required to participate in fogging activities which occur outside normal working hours as warranted by levels of mosquito activity.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to assist in the management and control of mosquitos, rodents, and other vector related problems, by participating in the city's Integrated Pest Management Program. Success in this position contributes to an improved quality of life for City residents.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, environmental control personnel, public health professionals, and members of the general public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in an office, stockroom, and outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of personal protective equipment, such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.
