Utilities System Technician In-Training/I/II/III/IV Details

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Performs maintenance, construction, repair, replacement and installation of the distribution, wastewater, and storm drainage systems in the City’s service area.

Conducts bacteriological tests, disinfection procedures, testing, and inspections.

Locates leaks and makes repairs to steel, ductile iron, cast iron, PVC, and copper lines.

Records and maintains daily log of repairs and maintenance performed on equipment and tools.

Maintains equipment and facilities.

Reads quad maps, as-built maps, and design maps/drawings

Uses GIS system.

Uses CCTV to televise sewer and storm mains.

Uses electronic radio detection devices to locate and mark Englewood’s underground utilities.

Assists with hydrant flushing and maintenance

Attends technical and safety training to maintain regulatory requirements.

Follows safety policies and procedures on a day-to-day basis.

Performs routine and emergency customer service relations in a polite and professional manner.

Records details of work performed daily.

Assists in training personnel in the correct procedures and techniques used in performing wastewater collection and water distribution functions.

Monitors confined space atmosphere.

Performs other duties as assigned and required.


PREPARATION AND TRAINING


Education: High School Diploma or GED


Work Experience:

Utilities System Tech in Training: Entry Level

Utilities System Tech I: –Minimum of 1-year experience in a related field.

Utilities System Tech II: Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a related field.

Utilities System Tech III: Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a related field.

Utilities System Tech IV: Minimum of 4 years’ experience in a related field.


Certifications and/or Licensures:

Utilities System Tech in Training: Water Distribution or Wastewater Collection class I Certification within 1 year of employment.

Utilities System Tech I: Distribution or Wastewater Collection Class I Certification within 1 year of employment.

Utilities System Tech II: Distribution or Wastewater Collection Class II Certification

Utilities System Tech III: Distribution or Wastewater Collection Class III Certification

Utilities System Tech IV: Distribution or Wastewater Collection Class IV Certification

Required Driver’s License: Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License within 6 months of employment

An equivalent combination of education, training and relevant job experience may be substituted.


KNOWLEDGE

Working knowledge of water delivery systems and wastewater collection systems preferred

Basic knowledge of:

The tools and equipment used in water distribution or wastewater collection systems

Maintenance, flushing, root removal techniques and TV van procedures

Work zone safety

Maintenance and repair of the Water Distribution or Wastewater Collection System

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Computer Skills - Basic computer skills required to maintain daily and monthly reports tracking repaired equipment, current inventory and materials used.

Communication Skills- Advanced customer service skills required to interact daily with residents.

Analytical Skills- Advanced analytical skills required to determine the proper depths for main installations, for disinfection procedures, and to determine solution for main breaks and flow blockages.

Mechanical Skills- Advanced mechanical skills required to operate a variety of pneumatic and hand tools, and power and heavy equipment.

Mathematical Skills- Advanced mathematical skills required to calculate dosages and hydraulics related to water distribution/wastewater collection.

Must be able to operate a loader, dump truck, backhoe, compactor, Vac-con, TV Unit and flusher.

Must be able to work in a confined space.


WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is performed primarily outside. Works near moving mechanical parts; exposed to fumes, airborne particles and various chemicals, some of which may be toxic. The employee is exposed to various conditions including noisy, hot and cold, or hazardous conditions, and confined spaces.
