United States Director of Development

Worldreader recently launched its Keep Children Reading program in the United States and aims to expand it nationally. It seeks a US Director of Development to guide Worldreader’s domestic development strategy and execution, ensuring alignment to the organization’s five-year impact goals. The US Director of Development will lead and build a domestic revenue team, explore diversified revenue streams and new business models, expand a strategic partnership vision across the United States, develop effective operational systems and processes, and ensure quality engagement and stewardship across Worldreader US donor, funder and partner streams.
The position reports to the Chief Impact Officer based in Atlanta. The position is preferably based in San Francisco, Chicago, or Atlanta.
Duties/Responsibilities:
New business, quality, and creative stewardship- Create and oversee foundation relationships, applications, reporting, and renewals, and oversee major donor stewardship, and cultivate corporate partnerships within the United States.
- Serve as the primary relationship manager for a portfolio of the organization’s top organization and foundation donors and prospects; plan, develop and oversee the implementation of strategies for the entire portfolio.
- Develop, implement, and oversee systems and quality standards for donor, funder, and partner stewardship, working in close collaboration with the International Director of Development.
- Strategically leverage Worldreader’s US board and current donors in prospect identification, visits, and solicitations, as appropriate.
- Continuously research and identify new leads and work diligently to convert to active donors, funders, and partners.
Strategic Management- Establish an annual US development work plan, integrating with global and regional goals, aligned with Worldreader’s Global Impact Strategy.
- Skillfully manage, coach, and support the continuous capacity building of the US team for greater diversified revenue success.
- Maximize and leverage, Worldreader’s Senior Leadership team for the achievement of revenue goals.
- Supervise and coordinate the work of fundraising/business development consultant(s) and identify new consultants and associates who can bring in additional expertise.
- Demonstrate a collaborative approach to support cross-functional revenue tactics.
Strategic Development Operations- Support regional offices in the execution of regional revenue plans in collaboration with Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships and Senior Director, Global Impact.
- Collaboratively support with the US Director of Programs, the development of creative initiatives that guide Worldreader to be a partner of choice for funders, implementing partners, and school networks.
- Develop and support donor events and international donor travel processes and protocols.
- Deliver accurate and timely revenue pipeline and forecasts to Chief Impact Officer.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement within the global development team.
Supervisory Responsibilities- Lead, supervise and support the work of the Worldreader's Development team: Major Gifts Director, Major Gifts Officer, Development Associate, and Grant Writer
- Develop staff by providing career development opportunities with appropriate training, encouragement, and supervision.
- Establish strong matrix-management relationships with the International Director of Development and all Regional Directors in order to effectively lead Worldreader’s global revenue efforts.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Bachelor degree required; Master degree preferable.
- Experienced fundraising in the domestic context and/or fundraising for reading/literacy programs preferred.
- Exceptional grant and technical writing skills are a must.
- Experience working with and cultivating relationships with foundations.
- Passion for and knowledge of technology and data for social good.
- Oriented and committed to detail and processes.
- Demonstrated success soliciting and securing six and seven-figure gifts.
- Advanced knowledge of special campaign planning and implementation is preferred.
- Knowledge of blended finance is a strong plus.
- Fluent in English; Spanish proficiency also preferred.
- Proficient in Salesforce or other CRM solutions.
Education and Experience:
- +10 years of experience in diversified fundraising streams and channels, including monthly pledge donor acquisition and stewardship, major giving, legacies and digital fundraising, strategic partnerships, corporate fundraising and engagement, and overall business development with a focus on foundations.
- Experienced fundraising in a domestic context and/or fundraising for reading/literacy programs is preferred.
- Significant experience in coordinating high-performing fundraising and partnership teams.
- Demonstrated track record of successfully working cross-functionally with program and marketing/communications staff to ensure successful fundraising.
Physical and Travel Requirements:
- Ability to adjust to the different time zones of Worldreader's global presence.
- Ability to travel nationally and internationally as needed.
