Muscatine Schools is hiring for two Special Education Aide positions for our Transportation Department. These Sped Paras are also known as "Bus Paras" as these Aides will accompany students safely to and from school on the school bus. These Special Education Aides are assigned to work 9-months/year while school is in session. A Bus Para will support the Bus Driver on the AM route (to school portion) and the PM route (from school portion). JOB REQUIREMENTS ANALYSIS EMPLOYEE UNIT: Clerical/Secretarial/Aide/Paraeducator FUNCTIONAL AREA: Support Staff REPORT TO: Transportation Supervisors STATUS: 9-Month Employee FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt The duties of a Special Education Transportation Aide are based upon both the number of students, the Individual Education Program (IEP) of each of the students, and the need of the students. These positions may begin/end with very little notice. The daily schedule is based on the bus routes. Bus route times are always subject to change. Required to take Chapter 103 Training __ Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training (includes preventative strategies, de-escalation skills, and communication techniques). Chapter 103 training does not need to be completed prior to employment. Required to complete Mandatory Reporting of Child and Dependent Adult abuse training as part of the pre-employment process. Assist with problem-reducing behavior on school bus and on school grounds to help reduce disruptions and off-task behavior in the classroom including on the bus to and from school. Consult with Transportation Supervisor, other school staff, and/or parents for re-direction and crisis procedures and plans, while communicating any concerns to Bus Driver and Transportation Supervisor. Students have been assigned Special Education Transportation Aides because of one or more conditions which diminish their capacities; examples include: reduced mental abilities, learning disabilities, behavioral disorders, etc. It is crucial that the student be provided with every opportunity to perform at the highest level possible in a manner appropriate to his/her Individual Educational Program (IEP). Because the student cannot meet all of his/her own needs without assistance, the aide must be able to perform a variety of tasks to assist the student. The aide must know and understand the Individual Educational Program (IEP) so that the aide does no more/less than what is outlined specifically in the IEP. These positions are scheduled for approximately 4 hrs/day, Monday through Friday. Route times are always subject to change. Approximate AM route length is 7am - 8:30am. Approximate PM route length is 2pm - 4:30pm. Bus Paras have the opportunity to be chosen for midday activity routes and other bus routes that occur throughout the school day.
Starting pay for this position is $16.34/hour. Bilingual preferred or highly desirable.
