Summary Description*
The Trail Volunteer Programs Supervisor – Southern New England sustains AMC's trail volunteer engagement, land manager relationships, partnerships with youth employment organizations, and AmeriCorps crews primarily in the Boston area and Western Massachusetts. The Trail Volunteer Programs Supervisor collaborates with AMC’s Volunteer Appalachian Trail committees in Connecticut and Massachusetts, Appalachian Trail Conservancy staff, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, New England National Scenic Trail staff, National Park Service, regional land trusts and other conservation organizations. AMC’s Southern New England region includes Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.
Ideal candidates have demonstrated experience with both traditional and contemporary trail maintenance and construction techniques, are adept at training others, have experience supervising seasonal staff and coordinating volunteer programs, have the ability to serve as a trail resource for local organizations in assessing trail needs and developing new trail projects or trail maintenance programs, and are committed to representing the AMC professionally within the regional trails community.

Duties and Responsibilities*

  • Coordinate and support AMC’s Youth Corps partnerships with youth employment organizations such as MassHire and SuccessLink. This includes hiring, training, and supervising seasonal staff (one Field Coordinator and two Crew Leaders per youth crew), collaborating with state agencies as well as local land managers and volunteers to determine trail project locations and logistics.
  • Coordinate and support AMC AmeriCorps crews based for 6 months at Noble View Outdoor Center. This includes facilitating training, identifying project locations and logistics, coordinating with land managers, occasional site visits, and working with AMC’s Grants and Agreements Manager to ensure all AmeriCorps requirements are met.
  • Serve as a staff liaison to AMC’s volunteer-led chapter trail committees throughout the Southern New England and Mid-Atlantic regions, as well as the Inter-Chapter Trails Committee. Schedule, facilitate, or participate in committee meetings as needed.
  • Coordinate, train, and support Southern New England regional Trail Adopter volunteer programs.
  • Plan, promote, manage registration and support for single-day trail volunteer opportunities in a variety of locations throughout the region.
  • Occasionally coordinate with other AMC staff from the development or group sales departments to plan custom trail volunteer programs for groups like corporate teams, scouts, college groups, etc.
  • Purchase and maintain all program related field gear, tools, and safety equipment.
  • Coordinate use and maintenance of transportation needs for AmeriCirps and Youth Corps with rented vehicles and/or AMC fleet vehicles.
  • Play a key role in the reduction of risk to participants and staff by ensuring critical program policies and guidelines are followed, as well as reviewing policies as needed. Actively participate in AMC’s Risk Management Team, manage Workers Comp. cases and incident reporting as needed.
  • Be on-call for emergencies during field season, late May through mid-September.
  • Responsible for tracking of credit card expenses, reimbursements to staff, invoices, and material and service contracts and purchases.
  • Collect work reports and hours from all Southern New England Trails Programs and compiles annual reports of participant enrollment, work hours and accomplishments, including reports for the ATC and other partners.
  • Assist AMC Grants Department on submission of various grants for Southern New England Trails Programs, including Recreational Trails Program grants and other funding sources.
  • Offer trainings on a variety of topics including trail building and maintenance techniques, safe tool use, Leave No Trace, etc. for seasonal staff, volunteers, and partner organizations/the public. Continually seek out professional development opportunities to enhance skills, safety, and effectiveness and to build capacity to offer trainings to others.
  • Independently coordinate and support a seasonal office at AMC Noble View Outdoor Center in Russell, MA, including operation and maintenance of standard office equipment, purchasing and managing office supplies, maintaining a cleaning schedule for the office, coordinating with AMC IT staff on repairs, and receiving and responding to emails and phone calls in a timely manner.

Qualifications: *

  • Minimum of 2 years of trail maintenance and construction, natural resource management, or outdoor programming, with previous supervisory and leadership experience. Experience can be in any combination of staff or volunteer roles.
  • Bachelor’s degree with studies in Recreation, Natural Resources Management or other relevant disciplines is desirable.
  • Possess, or be willing to obtain, a minimum of Wilderness First Aid and CPR. If needed, training can be provided by the AMC.
  • A keen sense for time management, balancing the needs of staff and volunteers with personal responsibilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365 applications, Adobe Acrobat, and Salesforce, as well as the ability to use, learn, and adapt to new technologies and changes in the IT infrastructure.
  • Ability work both independently and to collaborate with others.
  • Willingness to travel primarily within central and western Massachusetts and the Boston area, and occasionally to other locations in the Northeast.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving history subject to a driving record check conducted by the AMC.
  • Physical ability to travel safely on foot in all weather conditions on unimproved trails carrying up to 40 lbs. of gear. Ability to perform and teach a variety of trail work activities.
