The City of Glendale Aquatics Center is looking to fill Temporary Aquatics Lifeguard positions for “Winter Guarding” and Summer Lifeguards. Potential “winter” employees must be available during the entire winter aquatics season starting in late January 2022 through the end of Summer (August) 2022. “Winter Guarding” pool hours range from early mornings to late mornings to afternoons to late nights on weekdays and weekends. Please answer the questions in the application to declare which shifts you are available to work. We need early weekday mornings all the way through weekday afternoons.

Required training sessions will be held as needed.

Summer positions are up to 40 hours per week for up to 14 weeks summer position with no benefits as well as a possible opportunity to work up to 20 hours per week for up to the remaining 38 weeks in the year with no benefits. The summer jobs will be performed at both our Rose Lane Aquatics Center (5003 West Marlette Ave, 85301) as well as our Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center (5600 West Union Hills Drive, 85308). The winter jobs will be at our Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center (5600 West Union Hills Drive, 85308). Staff are required to work at either location as assigned. You are hired to the City of Glendale Aquatics Staff, not to a specific pool.

Aquatics positions within the City of Glendale require certifications BEFORE hiring.

City of Glendale offerings for Lifeguard Training for new Lifeguards typically occurs between February 2022 to March 2022, but we do accept trainings from other entities that teach Lifeguarding from American Red Cross or StarGuard. American Red Cross is preferred.

Essential Functions
Under the direction of the Aquatics Coordinator, Pool Manager, Assistant Manager, and the Head Guard the Temporary Aquatics Lifeguard will:

Responsible for the day-to-day safe pool operations.

  • Responsible for training and public safety, rescue and first aid.
  • Maintain crowd control during emergency situations by responding quickly and calmly; participate in mandatory rescue.
  • Maintain high standards of safety and skills/in-service training.
  • Review and implement pool rules and regulations.
  • Exhibit concise communication skills verbally and written.
  • Maintain firm and consistent customer service practices with staff and patrons.
  • Be knowledgeable and able to communicate details of City of Glendale Aquatics programs to patrons as well as other staff members.
  • Monitor own schedules and report schedule adjustments to management as needed.
  • Monitor facility functions to prevent accidents, drowning, and near drowning.
  • Monitor the activities of swimmers to detect problem areas.
  • Perform rescue techniques and render first aid during emergency situations.
  • Complete daily timecards, accident reports, incident reports and inventory needs.
  • Do the custodial cleaning of pool facility, including but not limited to restrooms, decks and the pool.
  • Maintain endurance and fitness through swimming and exercise.
  • Assure the timely opening and closing of the facility.
  • Become familiar with city rules and regulations for an aquatic environment.
  • Know the proper use of job related tools such as a whistle, megaphone, rescue tube, and first aid equipment.
  • Only if Cash Handling Trained through the City of Glendale, employee will handle money in a safe and accurate manner and provides exceptional guest services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications/Special Requirements/Success Factors
Applicants must be at least 15 years of age.
Must have an American Red Cross Lifeguard & First Aid Training R.17 certification that does not expire before September 2022 and American Red Cross CPR & AED for the Professional Rescuer R. 17 that does not expire before September 2022.

  • If applicant possesses a current StarGuard certificate and can properly perform skills, they will be considered for hire. If hired, the applicant will be "crossed-over" to the American Red Cross certificates listed above.
  • Two years of high school preferred.
  • Fluency to read, write, and speak English is required. Ability to read, write, and speak Spanish is preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Maintain American Red Cross swimming skills.

Essential physical abilities:

  • Sufficient body flexibility and balance to perform rescue and first aid operations and occupy a lifeguard station accessible by ladder or perform walking duties.

Working Conditions
Subject to extreme heat for periods of more than one hour and, subject to noise, sun exposure and extreme weather conditions
