Job Description:

Provide direct service to students with hearing disabilities and consultation/training to relevant family and staff so that deaf and hearing impaired students can be successful in the least restrictive setting.


Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Obtain and review available medical/audiological information pertaining to the student’s performance and hearing needs; consult with medical staff and audiologists as appropriate regarding student’s hearing loss and use of appropriate amplification
  • Monitor the condition and use of appropriate amplification equipment for each student
  • Consult with classroom teachers around instructional strategies to adapt or modify learning tasks, the physical setting, and/or performance assessments to ensure student success in the least restrictive environment.
  • Conduct assessments for initial or special education re-evaluations in order to determine the student’s academic and communication needs.
  • Attend and participate in the IEP or 504 meetings of students. Collaborate and consult with team members to develop IEPs or 504 plans that will meet the identified student’s needs.
  • Work directly with hearing impaired students by writing IEP goals, providing direct service for those goals, and monitoring progress via data collection and written progress reports.
  • Provide basic training to students and teachers on individual and/ or classroom amplification systems used by students.
  • Train students and staff members on the implementation of assistive technology devices related to hearing impairments.
  • Establish and maintain a positive atmosphere while working with staff in order that this atmosphere may be carried over for the hearing impaired student
  • Provide emotional support for students and families to promote understanding and coping skills for children’s hearing loss.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills in the areas of language development and language refinement needed by hearing impaired children
  • Demonstrate knowledge and teaching ability with regard to the following specialized areas:
    • auditory training
    • speech and speech reading
    • monitoring amplification
    • use and maintenance of hearing aids
    • use of interpreter
    • Total Communication approach

Requirements Qualifications:

  • Masters required
  • Mass DESE Deaf and Hard of Hearing certification required
  • SEI Endorsement
  • Ability to effectively communicate with both deaf and hard of hearing students, using sign language when appropriate.
