Position Summary:
Provides care and education for children and their families in a child care center. Responsible for the implementation of the program in an assigned classroom and center. Supervises Instructional Assistants and Associate Teachers in the classroom setting per Center Supervisor. Supports CAPSLO’s mission by ensuring that children are served, along with their families, at a high level providing a rich education experience for all who are enrolled.

Additional Education & Experience
1. Semester Units in ECE/CD include course work in early childhood education/child development and at least one course in each of the following core areas 1) child/human growth and development 2) child, family and community, or child and family relations; 3) programs/curriculum. Must have received passing grade of “C” or better or credit.
2. Degree must include sixteen diversified semester units in general education (i.e., at least one course in each of the following areas: Humanities and/or Fine Arts, Social Sciences, Math and/or Science and English/Language Arts.
3. Experience must be in a licensed day care center, comparable home day care or group child care program for children ages 0 - 5 under the supervision of a person who would qualify as a Center Supervisor. College internships and labs served in a licensed day care center will count as experience.
4. For infant/toddler center(s), 3 semester units in infant/toddler development and/or programs must be included as part of the course work requirement for all of the above.
5. Must hold appropriate Children’s Center Permit or qualify for an appropriate Children’s Center Permit prior to beginning employment and apply within 60 days of commencing employment. State Child Development program requires permit be held prior to beginning employment (Temporary County Certificates also acceptable).
6. MSHS, HS, EHS programs require AA/AS or BA/BS in Early Childhood Education, Child Development or closely related field including coursework equivalent to 24 semester units ECE/CD.

Essential Functions:
1. Supports the Center Supervisor in carrying out responsibility at the center level for the overall quality of the experience offered to children and families including the assurance that laws, regulations, guidelines and policies are adhered to on a daily basis.
2. Coordinates and conducts home visits and parent conferences as needed and schedules the visits at times that are suitable for the families (may require evenings and weekends).
3. Coordinates planning the overall education plan for the center and assumes responsibility for implementing the plan in the classroom. The plan will include program individualization for each child, tracking each child’s development and development of individual goals for each child with input from the parent.
4. Responsible for maintaining accurate documentation and tracking of the appropriate instruments and forms to ensure all program requirements are met in the mandated time frame as per program standards, including the following:

4. Ongoing Assessment and Transition Plans
5. Meal counts as delegated
6. Tracking sheets as delegated
7. Other documents as assigned
5. Plans and implements the curriculum and ensures the center environment (indoor and outdoor) is developmentally appropriate, safe and offers children a wide variety of experiences.
6. Must have visual supervision of all children at all times.

Responsibilities and Duties:
1. Participates in physical activities (games, music and movement, outside play) with children, which involve lifting, bending, carrying, twisting, stooping, pulling, pushing, reaching and other repetitive motions.
2. Attends and participates in all staff meetings and required trainings. Attends in-service training as assigned by the program manager.
3. Keeps Center Supervisor informed of any problems or concerns relating to individual children/families and/or the operation of the program.
4. Has primary responsibility for overall quality of educational experience for all children, including child/children with disabilities.
5. Preschool: Aids children in developing self-help skills; toileting, feeding, dressing, napping, etc. Infant/Toddler: Takes care of tasks such as diapering, feeding, dressing, preparing room for naptime, setting out snacks and meals, and clean-up.
6. Assesses and implements, as a member of a multi-disciplinary team, each child’s Individual Education Plan (IEP)/Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) and participates in case conferencing, as needed.
7. Utilizes program policies and procedures to guide the day-to-day operations of the center.
8. May participate in daily housekeeping duties at the center level including vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, dusting, etc., which involves twisting, lifting, bending, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, etc. Ensures that the cleaning procedures are followed and the proper sanitation products are implemented, as designated by the Health Coordinator.
9. Maintains confidentiality of records and information of program families.
10. Provides appropriate guidance to all children. Ensures personal rights of children are maintained at all times.
11. Responsible as a Mandated Reporter of Child Abuse and Neglect. Accordingly, follows procedures for reporting known or suspected child abuse and neglect.
12. Must use reasonable precaution in the performance of one’s duties and adhere to all applicable safety rules and practices; and act in such a manner as to assure at all times, maximum safety to one’s self, fellow employees and children.
13. Performs other duties as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge
1. Knowledge of teaching principles and methods for curriculum design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
2. Knowledge of classroom management principles, resource allocation and overall implementation of program standards.
3. Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations.
Skills
1. Must have strong written and verbal communication skills, and be able to communicate effectively with clients and program staff.
2. Must have strong computer skills with experience working with MS Office programs (Word, Excel), database programs and general internet use.
3. Must demonstrate sound judgment, supervisory and administrative skills.
4. Must be skilled in the development and implementation of educational lesson planning for groups and individuals, some of whom are individuals with disabilities;

1. Must have knowledge of and the ability to comply with applicable laws and regulations.
2. Must be able to maintain good working relationships with other program staff.
3. Must be self-motivated and able to work with a minimum of supervision.

Infant/Toddler center staff must be willing to participate in Program for Infant/Toddler Care (PITC) cohorts as they become available.

6. Must be able to supervise a group of children.
7. Must be able to organize and maintain accurate record keeping and reporting.
8. Must be able to recognize emergencies and areas where action is necessary.
9. Must be dedicated to the goals and philosophy the program.
10. Must uphold program Standards of Conduct at all times.
11. Must be able to relate well to all people of the community regardless of color, national origin, religion, sex, pregnancy, age, marital status, veteran status, sexual orientation, disability or socio-economic level.
12. Must understand, uphold, and continue working toward accomplishing the mission, strategic goals and performance measures of the agency.

Supervisory Responsibility:
Assumes supervisory responsibility for an assigned classroom and manages the overall operation of the center in the absence of the Center Supervisor. Assumes supervisory responsibility as delegated by the Center Supervisor.

Work Environment:
This job operates in a classroom environment as well as outdoors. Additionally, this role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, printers, copiers and phones.

1. Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds and have unrestricted use of the upper and lower body.
2. Must be able to bend, squat, reach, kneel, and climb stairs.

4. Must be able to move from a sitting to standing position quickly, safely, and without difficulty.
5. Must be able to chase a fleeing child. Must be able to join the children’s active play including jumping and running indoors and outdoors.

Vision, Hearing and Speech

Travel:
Must have dependable, insured transportation and valid California Driver’s License (mileage to be reimbursed) and acceptable driving record. A DMV printout and proof of insurance will be required. (Not required for Substitutes)

Preferred Education and Experience:
Experience working with children with disabilities.

License & Certifications:
1. Valid California Driver’s License and reliable insured vehicle available for business use (mileage to be reimbursed) and acceptable driving record. A DMV printout and proof of insurance will be required. (Not required for Substitutes)
2. Must possess a valid Children’s Center Teacher Permit or higher.
3. Must provide certificates of completion of approved pediatric first aid and pediatric CPR training within (30) days of hire.
4. Must renew and maintain a valid Children’s Center Teacher Permit or higher at all times.
5. Must provide certificates of completion of approved pediatric first aid and pediatric CPR training within 30 days of hire. Employee is responsible for renewing and maintaining a valid CPR/first aid certification at all times.
6. Must complete 16 hours of training on preventative health practices, as required by Health and Safety Code within 30 days of hire.
7. Must complete Safety Training (Performance Standards; 1302.47) within three months of hire;

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:
1. Must be at least 18 years of age by date of hire.
2. Must submit proof of current vaccination status for measles, pertussis, and influenza (or a current, signed influenza declination form) in compliance with SB 792.
3. Must comply with the CAPSLO COVID-19 Vaccination Policy, either being fully vaccinated or have an approved exemption.
4. Must complete a health screening physical completed within 30 days prior to employment and a current TB skin test/Chest X-Ray.
5. Employment is contingent upon meeting all job requirements and background requirements: criminal history check (Inclusive of DOJ, FBI and Child Abuse), acknowledgement of child abuse reporting responsibility, criminal record statement (Form LIC508), etc. A criminal history clearance is required prior to employment.
6. Upon hire agency staff will check the Megan’s Law (or the current sexual predator website) to ensure each staff being hired is clear for employment. Program administrative staff will check the website annually to ensure all program staff are cleared to work.
7. Must meet the Head Start Performance Standards and State requirements.
8. Employment in Head Start, Early Head Start and Migrant and Seasonal Head Start Programs is contingent upon approval of the Policy Council.

CAPSLO offers benefits through a group medical, dental, vision, flexible spending account, life and AD&D insurance program. CAPSLO pays the full amount (100%) of the premiums to cover full-time employees, and half (50%) of the premiums to cover eligible part-time employees. Retirement Savings Plan
CAPSLO offers eligible employees the opportunity to contribute a portion of their earnings to a Section 403(b) Retirement Plan. Employees are 100% vested upon enrollment into the plan. CAPSLO matches 60% of every dollar contributed up to an annual maximum of 15% of your annual salary (not to exceed IRS limits) after 6 months of employment.

Holidays
Twelve paid holidays during the course of the each calendar year. Employees also receive one extra workday off with pay as a "Personal Holiday."

Vacation/Sick Leave
CAPSLO awards 80-160 hours of vacation annually with a maximum accrual of 320 hours, depending on years of service. Paid Sick time is accrued at 8 hours per month (based on weekly hours) with a maximum accrual of 280 hours. CAPSLO also offers the opportunity to convert unused sick time to vacation and a vacation cash out for eligible employees once a year.
