JOB SUMMARY:

The Blood Bank Manager is responsible for providing managerial and operational oversight for the laboratory blood bank services including transfusion services. This position on occasion performs duties and functions as a medical technologist. In addition, the Blood Bank Manager oversees the performance and quality improvement initiatives for areas of responsibility.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Organizes, plans, and directs operational processes, staff scheduling, workflow, human resource issues, and staff development.
  • Develops, establishes, and ensures implementation of standardized Blood Bank Services technical/service policies/procedures within the Bon Secours Charity hospitals.
  • Assures quality control and proficiency testing is performed as per policy and within practice guidelines.
  • Assures staff compliance to policies and procedures.
  • Performs review of patient test results and quality reports.
  • Performs staff training and competency.
  • Evaluates the performance of blood bank staff.
  • Performs payroll duties.
  • Performs technical duties such as patient testing, quality control testing, and instrument maintenance.
  • Performs computer functions to process test orders.
  • Troubleshoots orders and provides proper communication to the clinician as appropriate.
  • Assists in the validation of test systems for the laboratory.
  • Ensures supply levels are adequate and orders supplies when needed.
  • Provides appropriate oversight to the clinical staff in the laboratory to ensure policies/procedures are performed in accordance with accreditation standards, regulatory licensing requirements, regional guidelines, and safety regulations.
  • Makes recommendations for testing, equipment and other clinical standard practice changes.
  • Serves as primary resource to the hospital committees such as the Blood Utilization Committee.
  • Coordinates with laboratory leadership in the identification, implementation and optimization of patient testing.
  • Implements new processes as approved by Laboratory leadership.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:

    Must meet NYS personnel guidelines to function as a supervisor (a minimum of six years relevant work experience). Valid New York State Department of Health license as a laboratory technologist. National registration preferred (NCA/ASCP).

    Education:

    Bachelor’s Degree in laboratory sciences or related degree.

Individuals in this position are required to exercise universal precautions, use personal protective equipment and devices, and learn the policies concerning infection control.
