Summary

Assists in preparation of the surgical patient by performance of routine and delegated duties, according to standards and policies. Performs scrub duties and related procedures. Performs housekeeping duties as necessary and assists in maintenance of all supplies. Provides assistance in emergency procedures, as well as scheduled cases. Assists in preparation and transportation of patients, as directed. Maintains education in surgical, operating room and related aspects of patient care.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Scrubs, dons gown, and gloves in accordance with performance standards
  • Prepares table, instruments, and supplies according to the type of operation
  • Assist in preparation and draping of patient and operative area according to need.
  • Maintains surgical count with circulating nurse and reports corrections and discrepancies as set up in standard policy and procedures
  • Maintains aseptic technique at all times as dictated by accepted standards
  • Assists in maintenance and care of specimens as directed by standard procedure
  • Assists in application of dressing, casts, and in moving of patient as directed
  • Decontaminates all equipment, instruments, supplies and cleans room according to procedure
  • Maintains use and cleanliness of autoclaves by following directions of use and cleaning
  • Assists in maintenance of instrument and supplies by proper cleaning, care, utilization, and sterilization as directed
  • Maintains awareness of safety hazards and use of equipment to prevent damage or harm to personnel and patients
  • Assists in workroom in cleaning, storage, packing and autoclaving of instruments
  • Assists in inventory of supplies and equipment to assure availability and maintain par level
  • Opens and wipes down room in the morning to assure cleanliness and readiness for schedule/Closes room at days end according to policy
  • Assists in pre-op, sterile processing, PACU and other areas as needed under the direction a registered nurse
  • Maintains area of "special assignment", i.e. inventory of suture

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • High School graduate. Must have completed approved Operating Room Technician Course

Work Experience:

  • One year of OR experience is desirable, but may be waived depending on staffing patterns

Certification:

  • Certified Surgical Technologist certification required.
