Summary/ObjectiveYou will be responsible for maintaining a safe, supportive learning environment while assisting three to four (3 to 4) transition-aged (16-21 years) students with disabilities in developing a greater understanding of the options available to them once they transition from youth to adult services.During the Weaver Industries’ Summer Transition Program (Program), you will:

  • Support the students in on-the-job training (work experience) at two different worksites (one being Canal Park, a.k.a. the Akron Rubber Ducks stadium)
  • Teach work-related soft skills using a provided curriculum (Skills to Pay the Bills)
  • Engage students in career exploration opportunities (virtual interviews, field trips, etc.), and
  • Explore available post secondary education opportunities (i.e. programs at both Kent State University and Stark State University, OneBridge Center employment skills training, etc.).
The Program is six weeks in duration (Tuesday, June 1 to Friday, July 9, 2021 and Monday, July 12 to Friday, August 20, 2021) and operates Monday through Friday, four (4) hours per day (9AM – 1:00PM). Outside the four hours of the program, you will be responsible for transporting your students to and from the Program, either in your own vehicle with mileage reimbursement (if approved) or in a company-provided vehicle.You can apply for just one of the six-week sessions or for the entire 12 weeks (preferred).There is a mandatory 40-hour (approximate) paid training/certification process that must be completed prior to the assignment. This includes Weaver-specific training, the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities certification training, First Aid and CPR training, and Safe Driver training.


Essential Job Functions

  • Work hands-on with a group of students at a job site to help them learn the job and assess areas for improvement
  • Instruct students in how to complete job tasks independently
  • Communicate verbally and in writing regarding desired work and progress of training
  • Attend scheduled work sessions with assigned groups
  • Advocate for students and model appropriate work behaviors
  • Ensure work site safety practices
  • Teach workplace soft skills using the US Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy “Skills to Pay the Bills” curriculum.
  • Facilitate both career exploration and post-secondary education options (college, vocational/trade school)


Supervisory Responsibility
  • Must train and oversee youth participating in the program (per DODD rules using proper supervising and safety techniques, as well as reviewing training effectiveness)
  • Must maintain a Safety Program for crew members, reviewing for continuous improvements
  • Complete and submit all required documentation reports and evaluations.
  • Must follow MUI/UIR reporting procedures (per CSBDD and the DODD rules)
  • Must report any changes or behavior issues to the youth's Service & Support Administrator (SSA), the Weaver Training & Advocacy Support Manager
  • Adhere to confidentiality policy
Qualifications
  • 18 years of age and a high school diploma or equivalent (Required)
  • Higher education course work in education, special education or transition-to-work (Preferred)
  • A valid driver’s license and proof of auto insurance
  • Must be able to pass a company-paid physical, background check and drug screen
  • Regular attendance and must be available the entire six weeks of the Program (Required)
  • Able to relate in a positive manner to people who have varied roles and responsibilities
  • Able to perform independent problem-solving Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to follow verbal instructions
  • Excellent customer service abilities


Work Environment

Work assignments will be both indoors and outdoors. You may work in conditions that may include exposure to blood-borne pathogens, communicable diseases, potentially infectious material, and aggressive behavior.

Physical Demands
