VIRTUAL/ DISTRICT WIDE ASSET UNIT/ INTERNSHIP/ SAN JOSE

Valley Water’s mission is to provide Silicon Valley with safe, clean water for a healthy life, environment, and economy. We manage an integrated water resources system that includes the supply of clean, safe water, flood protection and stewardship of streams on behalf of Santa Clara County's 2 million residents.

Our popular internship program provides excellent opportunities to explore your chosen career path, develop industry specific skills and knowledge, and increase your professional network! Summer 2021 will be the first-ever virtual cycle of our Summer Internship Program and will provide interns with training and experience with virtual collaboration tools and remote work. Each intern will have a mentor and will be provided virtual professional development training, participate in virtual networking events, attend virtual meetings, and prepare a virtual Capstone presentation at the end of the program. We do have some positions that require the intern to be in the lab, office or field so check the internship location status below.

The District-wide Asset Management Department implements and continually improves asset management standards and information systems based on industry best practices. Valley Water owns approximately 275 miles of creek that need to be operated and maintained to a certain level of risk to ensure we provide a safe, healthy ecosystem and support stream stewardship to Santa Clara County. It is the Asset Management unit's responsibility to oversee and recommend planned maintenance and capital projects of our creek assets to make the best use of our public funds at the most effective time.


INTERNSHIP LOCATION STATUS: This internship is 100% virtual. For virtual work, Interns must perform their work in the State of California not more than 150 miles from Valley Water's office (5750 Almaden Expressway, San Jose, CA).

Required License or Certificate

WE LOOK FOR INTERNS WHO ARE:

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's in civil engineering or related field (environmental, mechanical, etc.)
  • Motivated individual who is a self-starter, willing to learn, and hardworking
  • Excellent written and verbal communication

AS AN INTERN YOU WILL:

  • Assist with the development and updating creek level service documents to support watershed operations and maintenance in the development of creek maintenance guidelines, which includes researching the District's records and collecting basic field data and photos.
  • Assist with reviewing and/or updating watershed workflow documents, asset databases, creek condition, maintenance strategies, and long-term capital replacement strategies, and comparing risk scores for certain creeks.

Lizzie M. is a graduate of Santa Clara University with a major in Civil Engineering with a Professional Engineer license. When she is not working on creeks, she enjoys going back to Bay Area schools and universities for career days, alumni panels, and resume/interview workshops. Lately she’s been enjoying spending time with family both in the states and in Mexico via Zoom, playing 1:1 soccer, and sweating off the desserts she bakes with virtual bootcamp.

ELIGIBILITY:
The Summer Internship Program is open to undergraduate (Junior or Senior) and higher graduate-level students who will be enrolled in a community college/university for Fall 2021.

  • Pass a pre-employment screening process to include a background check
  • Proof of enrollment will be required prior to start of assignment
  • Can work full-time (40 hours/week) during the Summer Internship Program (June to August)

Interns who have participated in the Valley Water's Summer Internship Program in past years are not eligible to apply.
