Description of Job

GENERAL SUMMARY
TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded program that serves students overcoming obstacles to education, including limited income, first generation to college, and disability. The primary objective of this position is to increase the persistence, graduation and transfer of SSS participants. The Student Success Specialist provides intentional and intrusive advising to a cohort of SSS participants while coordinating academic tutoring, support, and enrichment activities.

PRIMARY DUTIES
The Student Success Specialist provides intentional and intrusive advising service for TRIO SSS participants, including academic, financial aid, financial literacy, transfer, career, and personal development advising. This requires the Student Success Specialist to develop and stay apprised of all relevant policies, procedures, and knowledge across these advising fields. Moreover, this requires the Student Success Specialist to develop and stay apprised of best practices, strategies, and skillsets required to effectively communicate with and motivate SSS participants.

The Student Success Specialist is responsible for coordinating academic support activities such as tutoring, multimedia learning tools, and academic “boot camps”; and developing and implementing value-added student activities. This includes academic enrichment and cultural activities such as international education experiences. In addition, this position collects, interprets, and utilizes data to: assess student needs, assess student learning, monitor student performance, provide intentional and intrusive advising, and evaluate programming.

The Student Success Specialist participates in the outreach and intake process for prospective TRIO SSS participants, and develops referral pathways with internal and external partners. This position conducts TRIO SSS orientations, interviews, and needs assessments of prospective TRIO SSS participants, and supervises TRIO SSS Academic tutors.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Education:
Bachelor’s degree in human services, social work, counseling, or relevant field.

Experience:

  • Three years in post-secondary holistic academic advising and program coordination or equivalent skills set and knowledge, with a preference for experience working with students from low-income, first generation, and disability backgrounds at a community college.
  • One year of professional experience working with TRIO Programs.
  • One-year experience working with student information database.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge of student advising theory and best practice.
  • Knowledge of project planning and coordination.
  • Knowledge of obstacles facing SSS-eligible students.
  • Cross-cultural interpersonal skills.
  • Data management skills.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Knowledge of guided pathways model.
  • Knowledge of the FAFSA process.
  • Ability to supervise work-study students and Peer Mentors.
  • Group presentation skills.
  • Ability to drive long distances within Colorado for coordination and implementation of program based activities.

    Licensure/Certification:
  • Must possess a current Colorado Driver’s License and a have clean Department of Motor Vehicle record.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    Education:
  • Master’s degree in education, psychology, social work, or a related field.

    Experience:
  • Experience working with students overcoming obstacles to education, including limited income, first generation to college, and disability.

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Bilingual communication and familiarity with the mission and operation of Federal TRIO programs.
