Berkeley Public Health (BPH) aims to improve population health, especially for the most vulnerable, through interdisciplinary collaborations, preeminent education, and transformational research. The Division of Biostatistics studies the factors that determine the distribution of health and disease in human populations, and improve the understanding of data that are relevant to issues in public health. Many issues in the health, medical, and biological sciences are addressed by collecting and exploring relevant data. The development and application of techniques to better understand such data is the fundamental concern of Biostatistics. The program offers training in theory of statistics and biostatistics, computer implementation of analytic methods, and opportunities to use this knowledge in areas of biological/medical research. The resources and facilities in BPH and the Department of Statistics, together with those of other university departments, offer a broad set of opportunities to satisfy the needs of individual students. Involvement of faculty from the Department of Biostatistics & Epidemiology at UC San Francisco enriches instructional and research activities.

Responsibilities
Utilizing specialized expertise, applies program responsibility for a broad academic discipline/student category to develop and present programs to students to enhance their learning capabilities in groups, and 1-on-1, for a wide range of issues, including: discipline-specific; coding; course-based (advanced); study strategies; deconstructing a syllabus. Includes consulting and support for regular biostatistical research issues for Capstone Courses at the MPH-level in the school. The includes basic concepts of probability and statistics, estimation and hypothesis testing, and multivariable regression methods.
Develops and manages study groups tied to specific department courses or series of courses.
Designs, develops, implements, and delivers multi-format programs and training for a broad academic discipline (i.e., Biostatistics) to enhance the learning process for students and support their academic success.
Establishes and maintains partnerships with academic units on outreach, orientation, academic strategy, and enrichment workshops, community building events, and activities.
Other duties, as assigned.
Participates in workshops, trainings, and other professional development activities.
Provides guidance to Graduate Student Affairs Officers (GSAOs) on pedagogic issues affecting students in their programs.
Trains and provides guidance to graduate students, staff, and student interns who teach, advise, and coach students.
Required Qualifications
Advanced knowledge in providing applied biostatistical consulting to students completing research projects, MPH capstone projects, data management, analytic methods, and statistical computing.
General biostatistical consulting which includes basic concepts of probability and statistics, estimation and hypothesis testing, and multivariable regression methods.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Skills in judgment and decision-making.
Multicultural competencies, and ability to work with diverse populations.
Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
Demonstrated successful track record in communication of biostatistical concepts to people with a broad spectrum of quantitative backgrounds.
Applied data analysis experience, including analysis of epidemiologic data using methods such as generalized linear models, hierarchical and repeated measures data, and survival analysis.
Strong skills in data management and analysis using statistical programming languages, including fluency in R.
Experience with RMarkdown, Latex, GitHub.
Education/Training:
Master's or PhD level degree in biostatistics, statistics, epidemiology, or related area, and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of academic curricula.
Knowledge in designing and implementing learning and pedagogical models.
Knowledge of strategies in critical thinking, reading, writing, note taking, test taking, time management, and goal setting.
Supervisory skills to hire, train, and provide coaching and guidance to student workers and student interns.
Demonstrated skill in writing for scientific publication.
Fluency in additional statistical computing languages, include SAS/Stata.
Experience with both base R and the tidyverse R packages (e.g., dplyr, ggplot2) and philosophy.
Salary & Benefits
This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $86,000.00 - 96,000.00.
