The Department of Transportation (DOT) is seeking Street Sweeper Operators in the Infrastructure Maintenance (IM) Division. Street Sweeper Operators in DOT have the principal responsibility of the sweeping crew to provide clean streets on a consistent basis by effectively clearing trash and other accumulated debris from designated routes using a street sweeper. Currently the Department utilizes three types of sweepers: Elgin, Tymco, and Schwarze sweepers.


Positions & Duties

Each assigned route is approximately 40 curb miles in length per night. Currently, sweeper operators work the graveyard shift, 12:00 a.m. (midnight) Sunday to 8:30 am, Friday morning. These hours and days are subject to change as business needs dictate. Incumbents may be required to perform other duties occasionally when weather, equipment failure or other circumstances warrant.

Principal areas of responsibility may include:

  • Operates a motorized street sweeper in cleaning City streets and gutters

  • Drives sweeper to assigned route; maneuvers sweeper along the street near the curb to clean street and gutters, operates controls to activate brushes and water spray for the removal of dust and pick-up of litter; sets patterns on brooms, adjusts grooves, guards and conveyors

  • Checks and adds fuel, oil, air and other equipment fluids; refills machine water tank from hydrant using a hose as necessary

  • Positions warning devices as appropriate during sweeper operation and is responsible for vehicle and pedestrian safety in the work area

  • Responsible for the safe operations of equipment utilized, security and cleaning of the area

  • Cleans and makes minor adjustments/repairs to the sweeper on the route; reports damage requiring more extensive or complex adjustments or repairs; wash and clean sweeper at the end of the shift

  • Keeps daily records of work performed; reports mileage, water source/consumption, number/location of dumps and other operational details

  • May train other equipment operators in using street sweeping equipment

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Education and Experience: Education Completion of high school, General Educational Development (G.E.D.) Certificate, or California Proficiency Certificate.

2. Experience: Four (4) years experience in the maintenance and repair of streets, sewers, parks or public facilities, or related field at the level of Maintenance Worker I including one (1) year of experience operating and maintaining a motorized street sweeper or related equipment requiring comparable operating skills in construction and/or maintenance work.

3. Acceptable Substitution: None

4. Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a valid State of California Class B driver’s license. As a condition of employment in some designated positions, possession of a valid State of California Class A or B driver's license is required in the performance of job duties.

Selection Process
