Under the direction and guidance of the Program Director - Athletics and consistent with the mission of the YMCA and the policies and guidelines of the YMCA of Western North Carolina, the Sports Coordinator is responsible for assisting in the delivery, development, and implementation of all sports and adventure programs and related operations, to include but not limited to Youth and Adult Sports, Summer Camps, Gym schedule and activities. The Sports Coordinator is accountable for delivering exceptional and outstanding programs and service to YMCA members, volunteers, and program participants. The Sports Coordinator is a highly visible representative of the YMCA mission, cause, and character development values.

Essential Functions:

Sports Coordinator must:

  • Know and understand all YMCA policies and procedures, and ensure that all these procedures are always consistently enforced.

  • Assist as needed in emergency situations and as outlined in emergency procedures. Able to hear noises and distress signals.

  • Continuously exhibit honesty, caring, respect, responsibility, reliability, flexibility, maturity, and good decision-making skills.

  • Display a professional, courteous, and tactful demeanor at all times. Always strive to display a positive and enthusiastic attitude.

  • Always champion the YMCA culture. Continually provide outstanding customer service, and strive to develop committed members, program participants and volunteers.

  • Constantly greet and develop relationships with members, program participants and volunteers throughout the facility and in the community.

  • Answer phone calls, handle participant concerns, and be able to answer questions relating to programming in a prompt and timely manner.

  • Display competence with the necessary computer systems. Perform a variety of related functions related such as data entry, report processing, and financial management.

  • Assist in performing daily administrative work as needed such as filing, copying and record keeping.

  • Assist in developing, scheduling, implementing, and supervising all youth and adult sports programming including but not limited to soccer, basketball, flag football, t-ball/baseball, volleyball, gymnastics, tennis and camps.

  • Assist in developing and distributing schedules for all programming, including sports practices & games. Develop and distribute sports rules, guidelines, and handbooks.

  • When needed, transport and set up equipment for programming, including games and practices.

  • Operate all programs in a manner that is consistent with YMCA of WNC standards and YMCA of the USA Mission-Driven Quality Promises. Plan and implement programs that focus on the total development of the participant mentally, physically, and spiritually. Insure that the YMCA Character Development values are evident in all programs and activities.

  • Assist in recruiting, hiring, developing, and evaluating the sports and camp staff.

  • Assist in developing and distributing schedules for the efficient staffing of programs.

  • Maintain harmonious rapport with all staff, volunteers, members, and the general public at all times.

  • Assist in marketing and promoting YMCA programs.

  • Understand the Y’s vision and philosophy and how they support each other. Be a team player who can solve problems and communicate positively with members, share knowledge about YMCA programs with members and the community, and work well with others.

  • Bend or stoop and reach to various height levels. Lift equipment (up to 50 lbs.).

  • Initiate communications with supervisor as necessary concerning program problems, personnel conflicts, and member concerns.

  • Enforce policies & procedures of the YMCA, which may require conflict resolution.

  • Perform other duties as required by supervisor.

  • Maintain cleanliness of sports fields/gyms and all equipment. Including, painting and field preparation for fall and spring sports.

  • Address, report and document malfunction of any and all equipment and/or facilities.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Sports Coordinator must be able to:

  • Physically perform all CPR and First Aid skills.
  • Available to work evening and weekend shifts.
  • Move to various locations in and around the YMCA of Western North Carolina Association.
  • Communicate verbally including clear and understandable speech.
  • Demonstrate basic computer skills. Can competently enter data, create schedules, rosters and learn to use our two main software tools; Daxko and PLAYERSPACE.
  • Positive attitude and outgoing personality.
  • Display strong interpersonal skills including communication (verbal and written), decision making, and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment.
  • Sports Coordinator must be 18 years of age or older, with previous experience in supervision and program development.

Must hold and maintain current certifications in the following:

  • CPR (including adult, infant, child, and two-rescuer)
  • Community First Aid, including Bloodborne Pathogen Certification
  • Emergency Oxygen Administration (O2)
  • Automated External Defibrillation (AED)
  • All required certifications must be obtained within 90 days of employment.
